Communities Meet at 1 Police Plaza for High Holy Days Briefing

NEW YORK, NY [CHI] — With the high holidays approaching, community leaders and activists gathered at One Police Plaza in Manhattan for a security report and threat assessment meeting covering the security of places of worship, with the commissioner of police Hon. Raymond Kelly.

Opening the ceremony was a dedication to the two detectives from the 107th precinct that were assigned to the case in which 8 Sifrai Torah were stolen in Queens, and managed to apprehend those involved and return the 8 torahs.

Members of the NYPD’s Shomrim Society all walked into the hall from the stage, each carrying one of the torahs as Dr. R. Alvin Kass, the NYPD’s Jewish Chaplin, recited a blessing of Shehecheyanu.

Mr. Kelly informed the crowd that while there were no threats for the coming holidays the police will be deploying a significant force around the city at each synagogue for their protection.

Among those attending the meeting was Rabbi Binyomin Klein, who has been attending these meeting for years, Isaac Zellermaier, Crown Heights Shomrim’s Coordinator and NYPD Liaison, Berel Sugar and Laivi Freundlich of the NY Jewish Leadership Council and R. Shea Hecht of the NCFJE.

Coordinators and representatives of Shomrim from Boro Park, Flatbush and Williamsburg were also present.

Once again the Vaad HaKohol of Crown Heights had no presence at the meeting.
