ATLANTA, GA [AP] — Andre Steiner was the muscle behind one of the most daring — and overlooked — missions to save Jews during the Holocaust.

In his youth, before he became a renowned architect, he helped engineer a plan to stave off the deportation of Slovakia's Jews through a network of work camps and a series of bribes that likely helped save the lives of thousands.

Remembering Reb Shmuel Tanchum Shuchat AH

Chof Gimmel Menachem Av marks three years since the tragic and untimely passing of Reb Shmuel Tanchum Shuchat OBM at the young age of 46 after battling a terrible illness, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Reb Shmuel is remembered by family and friends as cheerful and infectualy happy, “his good morning and smile brightened anyone that crossed his path” wrote a family member, and added “His beautiful, sweet voice that he was blessed with was not only used for himself, but also for the sick and to enlighten a Simcha that was in need.”

Unfortunately, over the past few days, the internet has become the source of much false information including frightening lashan harah regarding the closure of Michlelet Morasha. In order to beוהיית נקי מה' ומישראל I would like to clarify the facts.

Before I go into details, I want to reiterate our commitment to reimburse every parent who paid a deposit for the next academic year. The process has begun already. Some people were reimbursed already. It will take about 2 to 3 weeks. But again, every cent will be returned.

S. FALLSBURG, NY [CHI] – A Motzoai Shabbos tradition, which originally started in Mountain Lodge, took place once again in the Mei Menuchos bungalow colony. Children with their parents gathered round a warm and welcoming camp fire, some roasting marshmallows while others tried hotdogs and potatoes.

Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Shliach in London who spent Shabbos in the colony, told a fascinating story about the Rebbes care and sensitivity towards others feelings.

It may look as if PBA chief Patrick Lynch is giving Mayor Bloomberg heartburn yesterday-but Hizzoner couldn't be happier as they announce a deal to boost rookie cop pay and hike NYPD salaries by 17 percent over four years.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and the city yesterday agreed to a new contract that will hike police salaries by 17 percent over four years - raising rookie pay from $36,000 to $42,000 a year, the mayor announced yesterday.

The pact brings a 51/2-year veteran cop's pay up to $76,488, compared to the present $65,382.

The Rebbe says:

1. The first words of this week’s Torah portion are, “And it shall be, because you listened to these ordinances of Hashem (G-d)... He will love you, bless you and multiply you…”.

Rashi (an acronym for Reb Shlomo Yitzchaki) points out that the Hebrew word “Eikev” which is simply translated in this verse as “because”, also means “heel”. Consequently, explains Rashi, the verse is alluding to the sort of Mitzvos (commandments) that people regard as relatively unimportant so they tend to “trample on them with their heels”. Thus, the Torah is assuring the Jewish people that if they are careful to observe even these neglected commandments, they can be certain that Hashem will reward them with His kindness.

The source of Rashi’s explanation is from the Midrash Tanchuma who says this in a slightly different way; “When the Torah says, ‘Eikev’”, says the Midrash Tanchuma, “it is referring to “light” Mitzvos which people are not careful to keep and they throw them away under their heels”.
