“Operation Summer Brake” Enforcement

ALBANY, NY — The New York State Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T Thursday announced that “Operation Summer Brake” will take place beginning Monday, August 25, 2008 through Friday, August 29.

“As the summer travel season comes to a close, the Authority reminds motorists to drive responsibly and to remain alert and aware of their surroundings,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Michael Fleischer. “Although everyone is eager to get to their destination, please remember to be cautious while traveling through construction zones, always wear your seat belts, and never drink and drive.”

From August 25 through August 29, Members of State Police Troop T, dedicated solely to conducting speed and aggressive driving enforcement, will be deployed daily along the New York State Thruway.

Joseph Levin didn’t notice the truck in front of him Thursday morning until concrete and dust from the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 690 rained down on his car.

“It was like an explosion,” said Levin, a volunteer EMT from Brooklyn.

ATLANTA, GA [AP] — Andre Steiner was the muscle behind one of the most daring — and overlooked — missions to save Jews during the Holocaust.

In his youth, before he became a renowned architect, he helped engineer a plan to stave off the deportation of Slovakia’s Jews through a network of work camps and a series of bribes that likely helped save the lives of thousands.

Remembering Reb Shmuel Tanchum Shuchat AH

Chof Gimmel Menachem Av marks three years since the tragic and untimely passing of Reb Shmuel Tanchum Shuchat OBM at the young age of 46 after battling a terrible illness, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Reb Shmuel is remembered by family and friends as cheerful and infectualy happy, “his good morning and smile brightened anyone that crossed his path” wrote a family member, and added “His beautiful, sweet voice that he was blessed with was not only used for himself, but also for the sick and to enlighten a Simcha that was in need.”

Before I go into details, I want to reiterate our commitment to reimburse every parent who paid a deposit for the next academic year. The process has begun already. Some people were reimbursed already. It will take about 2 to 3 weeks. But again, every cent will be returned.

S. FALLSBURG, NY [CHI] – A Motzoai Shabbos tradition, which originally started in Mountain Lodge, took place once again in the Mei Menuchos bungalow colony. Children with their parents gathered round a warm and welcoming camp fire, some roasting marshmallows while others tried hotdogs and potatoes.

Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Shliach in London who spent Shabbos in the colony, told a fascinating story about the Rebbes care and sensitivity towards others feelings.
