Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn was the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe (widely known as the Frierdiker - Yiddish for “previous” - Rebbe). He served in that position for 30 years, from 1920 until his passing on Shabbos morning, January 28, 1950. He was buried at Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York.

Recently, someone sent me a link to a video clip of his levaya. From the clip one can see a number of external differences between Orthodoxy circa 1950 and Orthodoxy today.

EDINBURGH, UK — Muslim leaders have offered to stand guard outside a Scottish synagogue after it was vandalised in an alleged anti-Semitic attack.

Two men have appeared in court in connection with the attack on the synagogue in Edinburgh last week, when several window panes were smashed.

Every 28 years, Jews say a special blessing for the sun. Here it comes.

Here comes the sun, and Jews around the world are paying attention. According to Jewish tradition, on the morning of April 8, for the first time in 28 years, the sun will be in the exact location it was when the Torah says it was created, 5,769 years ago.

And what does that mean exactly? A solar rite? A celebration? A sun salutation?

The first Shiur, on 23 Adar, will cover the background and sources of the Mitzvah, the place of the sun on the day of the Bracha according to different opinions. The second Shiur will cover relevant questions including what is to be done on a cloudy day, what come first - Birchas hachama or Sreifas Chometz, and if you are allowed to look at the sun before making the Bracha.
