Back in the mid -1970’s, Chairman Leonoid Brezhnev addressed a large audience of Communist Party faithful gathered at the great stadium in Moscow.
“By the year 2000,” he declared, “every family in the Soviet Union will have its own airplane!” The crowd roared in sheer exhilaration.
Suddenly a small voice emerged from the great throng, “Mr. Premier! Mr. Premier! Why would a family in Moscow need an airplane?”
A great hush overtook the crowd. Then from nowhere a voice boomed: “Of course we shall need an airplane! How else will we get to Kiev when there are potatoes for sale?”

NEW YORK NY — Prominent Jewish leaders expressed concern over the dismissal of religious bias claims occurring in the grand jury proceedings against Sholom Rubashkin.
In a hearing last month, lawyers for Mr. Rubashkin argued that witnesses and prosecutors made several statements during the grand jury implying negative stereotypes about Jewish people, tainting their perception of the defendant. In a decision filed on Friday, the court declared that those claims were unfounded.
“Any time allegations of bias appear in the justice system, it is deeply troubling,” said Rabbi Pesach Lerner, executive vice president of the National Council for Young Israel. “We call for a thorough independent review of the testimony and a change of venue where true justice can prevail.”

N'shei Chabad of Rockland had a mivtzoim table at the annual Kosher Fair at Pathmark in Monsey yesterday. Hundreds of Jews visited the table that was laden with Shabbos candles, pushkas, pamphlets and Chassidus. The atmosphere was jovial and the mivtzoim materials were happily accepted by all. Mrs. P. Stanger of Albert Drive was the winner of the Kosher Quiz Raffle and proudly took possession of two Spice and Spirit cookbooks. Yasher Koach to Mrs. Yehudis Sassiver and Mrs. Yehudis Abramowitz for organizing the event and to Mrs. Chaya Jordan, Mrs.Yaffa Zager and Mrs. Miriam Bobroff and others for their outreach efforts at Sunday's Kosher Fair.

With profound sadness we inform you of the untimely passing, after a lengthy illness r"l, of R. Dovid Chai ben Nochum Hirsch HaLevi Levitan of New Haven, CT.
Reb Dovid is survived by his wife Batya and children, Avraham, Necha, Menachem Mendel, Chenya Rivka and Nochum Hirsch.
The Levaya will take place on Tuesday, Purim, and will be passing by 770 at around 9:30am and from there will be proceeding to the Montefiore Cemetary for the Kevura at 10:30am

Fire in a Jewish Home on Carroll Street
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A fire broke out in a Jewish home on Carroll Street this morning. The incident took place in 1340 Carroll, between Kingston and Brooklyn at around 10:00am.

“Rabbah and Reb Zeira (two prominent Amora’im) had the Purim feast together. They became intoxicated. Rabbah arose and slaughtered Reb Zeira. The next day, Rabbah prayed for mercy on Reb Zeira’s behalf and revived him.
The following year Rabbah asked Reb Zeira, ‘Let master come and we will have the Purim feast together’. Reb Zeira answered him, ‘Not every time does a miracle occur’”.

First Megilah Reading and Purim Party in the World!
CANTERBURY, New Zealand [CHI] — An overwhelming crowd filled the southern-most Chabad House in the world. Some two hundred people from across the country and the world, made their way to New Zealand’s only Chabad House. It was the first Chabad House globally to bring in Purim, due the time zone it is in. Rabbi Berri Spitetzki, assistant director of Chabad of New Zealand said, “This was definitely the largest crowd to congregate for Purim in the country’s history.”
Second Alarm Fire Destroys President Street House
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A fast moving fire tore through a home on President Street at around 11:00pm last night, Sunday. Many of the occupants were forced to jump from the windows to escape the flames. The fire quickly spread to all floors in the house and forced FDNY to elevate the fire to a ‘two alarm fire’.

MUMBAI — During the week of March 2, a series of meetings were held in Mumbai, India, to lay the groundwork for the future of Chabad-Lubavitch activities in the city.
Joining in the meetings, which included a tour of the Chabad House overtaken by terrorists last November, was Australian philanthropist Rabbi Joseph Gutnick, who pledged to help rebuild Chabad of Mumbai “to be even grander than before”; Rabbi Nachman Holtzberg, father of murdered Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg; and Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor of Thailand, who also oversees Chabad-Lubavitch in India.
