QUEENS, NY — The Queens assistant principal stricken with swine flu succumbed to the deadly virus today, the first person to die in the city from the disease, hospital officials said.
“We were treating him very aggressively,” said Flushing Hospital spokesman Ole Pedersen. “Unfortunately, he did expire at 6:17 p.m. this evening.”
The sick man, Mitchell Wiener, 55, an assistant principal at IS 238 in Jamaica Estates, first fell ill more than a week ago, but didn’t seek help at the hospital until his symptoms became severe early Wednesday morning.
Since that time, he’s been in a medically induced coma, on a ventilator.
We would like to wish Mazal Tov to Moishe Witkes (Worcester, Ma) and Mussie Denebeim (Palm Springs, CA) on their engagement.

Over 150 people attended a Grand Lag Bomer BBQ Celebration on the Beach. The family celebration included a Kosher Barbecue, a large Bonfire and singing Kumzits, Jewish Music, Kite Flying for the children, Water Balloons and a grand Watermelon Hunt (a watermelon is buried in the sand for the children to find).

Please give even a small donation to keep the Living Torah’s inspiration coming…even if it’s only $36, $18, or $10.
The main streets of Kharkov were closed at 10am in the morning in preparation for a special Lag Baomer parade celebrating the year of Hakhel . The police filled the streets and stopped trolleybuses and traffic on the main streets Pushkinskaya and Sumskaya as the Jewish community of Kharkov marched with pride passed the mayor’s office and the locals smiled and watched the crowd.
Imagine you are the motivational director of the strategic planning committee in heaven. You are asked to develop a way for the Yidden constantly inspired about Yiddeshkeit, to ensure a heightened awareness of what they need to know, to make sure they have a useful way to spend their time, and to give them something to look forward to.
Though the goals given to you are central to Jewish continuity, you are having difficulty finding an easy fix for this issue. Then you realize. The all in one fix is Torah learning.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2009, about 250 people gathered together to celebrate the holiday of Lag Ba’Omer at a program organized by Chabad Tzivos Hashem of Cleveland, Ohio. Everyone enjoyed various rides, live music, games and food. Children enjoyed proudly marching down South Green Road, as well as the Torah Rally.
Lag Ba’omer, the thirty third day of the Omer is a time when some seemingly mundane activities take on deep mystical significance. In past generations children would go out to the field with bows and arrows, sing songs, and publicly celebrate their heritage. In more recent years the Lubavitcher Rebbe encouraged that there should be parades with floats and music to encourage Jewish pride. This he said to do with as many people as possible and wherever possible to bring the message of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai to every corner of the world. Especially since this year is a Shnas Hakhel, a year of gathering when in the time of the Temple, Jews from around the world would gather together to rejoice and hear the King read from the Torah.

Sholom Aleichem. Imagine a priceless thing that no one wants. If it’s priceless, why doesn’t everyone want it? If no one wants it, why is it priceless? Please read on:
When the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn (1880-1950), left Soviet Russia after miraculously being freed from a death sentence, he was asked for his reaction to his recent experiences. He answered:
“If you wanted to give me a million dollars to go through it again, I would refuse. But if you wanted to give me a million dollars to erase one moment of the suffering I just went through, I would refuse that too.”
One seldom encounters a person who stands up for what is right even when life itself hangs in the balance. People who are harassed by powerful governments and hold steadfast to truth and their belief in G-d’s mercy are indeed heroic. You might think that I am describing a case that happened under some villainous totalitarian regime. Sadly, I am referring to events that occur in these hallowed (Yes, I really mean hallowed, as in sacred) United States of America.
