MUMBAI [AFP] — A man on Wednesday told an Indian court trying a Pakistani national over the 2008 Mumbai attacks how he escaped with his life after confronting two heavily-armed extremists with just a bamboo stick.

Security guard Kamal Singh said he rushed to the Nariman House Jewish cultural centre in the Colaba district of south Mumbai on the night of November 26 last year after hearing shots.

Winnipeg South Tory MP Rod Bruinooge announced $320,000 for the centre Sunday under Ottawa’s new shovel-ready infrastructure stimulus fund. The province matched the amount.

NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Bloomberg indicated yesterday that he supports the idea of a smoking ban in parks and beaches, but has reservations about how it would be enforced.

“Nobody is more of a believer in saving lives and stopping smoking,” Bloomberg said. “In fact, we already ban smoking, for example, in playgrounds.”
