Jews Celebrate Holiday of Sukkos with Chabad of Peoria

PEORIA, IL — Under a makeshift wooden hut, members of the Jewish faith gathered Monday to celebrate the third day of the Feast of Tabernacles, also known as Sukkot.

For eight days of the Biblical holiday, Jews eat under a four-sided structure covered by bamboo or palm branches to remember the 40-year period when the children of Israel wandered the desert and lived in temporary shelters, said Rabbi Eli Langsam, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Peoria.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — The former manager of Postville's kosher meat plant goes on trial this week to face allegations that he cheated a bank, laundered more than $1 million, concealed months of fraud and failed to pay livestock providers on time.

Sholom Rubashkin will confront 91 fraud-related charges Tuesday in a trial that could effectively send him to prison for the rest of his life. The former executive at Agriprocessors Inc. will step into a Sioux Falls, S.D., federal courtroom with his wife, Leah, and their children for a legal struggle that could last four to six weeks.

A Yom Tefillah and rally was arranged by the committee of Pidyon Shevuyim for a miraculous victory for Sholom Mordechai Rubaskin. They arranged a rally at the Ohel on Monday October 12th, Isru Chag, the day before the court case. Buses will 770 at 2:30pm and will return at 5:00pm for children 5 to 12. $3 bus fare.

There's a solid wall in front of me, blocking me from the wind, keeping me warm. Bodies pressed up against me, in front, back, and all sides. Squeezing my friend's hand to make sure she is still there. Moving, swaying, tapping to the beat, because it's catchy, infectious. Head bobbing up and down, lips singing along with the familiar tune.

As the night goes on, reservations disappear, to be replaced with a surge of energy. Giddy, high on happiness. And yes, some alcohol to loosen up. Hidden in coat pockets, disguised in water bottles and juice. But hey, if it works for you.
