Obama Removes Import Levy on Israeli Dairy Products

By Itamar Eichner for YNet News

WASHINGTON, DC — The United States has removed the import subcharge on dairy products from Israel, following diplomatic efforts exerted by the Israeli Embassy in Washington and the Israeli Agriculture Ministry.

Up to now, most of the world’s countries exporting milk products to the United States have been forced to pay a levy protecting local production. The financial damage caused to Israel’s farmers due to this tax amounted to tens of thousands of dollars.

Video – New Israeli Smart Car Prevents Pedestrian Accidents

ISRAEL — Imagine a car that can stop itself before hitting another vehicle or pedestrian. Well, a device being developed in Israel could transform driving habits forever.

You’re out for your morning drive to work. There’s little traffic, the roads are clear. All of a sudden you’re distracted from your driving, and a pedestrian has crossed right in front of your car. You have no time to brake.

Lone no More: Austin Jewish Community Celebrates 25 Years With Chabad’s Representatives

By Dvora Lakein for Lubavitch.com

When Rabbi Yosef and Rochel Levertov moved to the Lone Star state in 1984, its capital, Austin, had only a fledgling Jewish community. Initially, the couple’s mission was to serve the student body of the University of Texas (Jewish population: 4,000). Since then, they have expanded their efforts to include the greater Austin area, and have hired a young rabbi a (UT alumnus) to serve as the campus representative. A highly-acclaimed elementary school, holiday and Shabbat offerings, and a full roster of classes are only a smidgen of what the Levertovs have provided the Austin community.

Chabad’s Dominance in ‘Heroes’ Contest Reveals Power of Online Organizing

By Josh Nathan-Kazis for the Forward

Who are American Jewry’s heroes?

Mostly, they’re Lubavitchers. Or so it seemed, when the Jewish Federations of North America — the organization that until recently was called United Jewish Communities — announced the semifinalists of its online competition to select the winner of the inaugural Jewish Community Hero Award. Twelve of the 20 semifinalists were members of the Hasidic Chabad-Lubavitch sect, and Chabad’s dominance among the results has made the competition a target for some critics.
