Shea Hecht: “Sholom Rubashkin Refused Plea Bargain”

The trial of former kosher slaughterhouse executive Sholom Rubashkin began in South Dakota on October 12, though only after a failed effort to reach a plea bargain, according to a close confidant of the defendant.

Rubashkin, the former CEO of the Agriprocessors slaughterhouse, was arrested last year, five months after his company was the subject of a massive immigration raid; most of the 163 counts that Rubashkin has been charged with relate to bank fraud and harboring undocumented immigrants.

POSTVILLE, IA — Most people know of Agriprocessors for a single reason – it’s the site of last year’s federal immigration raid, one of the largest in the nation’s history. But before this event, Postville was known around the country for a very different reason – kosher meat.

Newly formed Agri Star CEO Hershey Friedman recalled, “people called us up, in reality we had calls from rabbis from different parts of the United States asking what’s going to be with them, where will they get their supplies.”

With great sadness and deep pain we inform you of the tragic and extremely untimely passing of Devorie (Rochel Devorah Nechama Bas Sara) Neuwirth of Montreal, Canada, mother of 4 children, at the young age of 41 after battling a terminal illness for over a year.

Devorie is survived by her husband, Zevi and four children, Motki, Chavee, Yehuda, and Rumi.

The Levaya will take place at 8:30am at Anshei Lubavitch on Trans Island in Montreal and the burial will be in the Old Montefiore Cemetery at 4:00pm in Queens.

Plenty of Rubashkin Supporters Show Up as Trial Begins

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Sholom Rubashkin’s supporters flooded a federal courthouse today to pray for a man they described as generous and warm-hearted.

Scores of Chabad-Lubavitch Jews crowded into the Sioux Falls courthouse with psalm books and whispered prayers for the ousted top executive at Agriprocessors, Inc., in Postville.

Video – Brooklyn MTA Bus Crash Caught on Camera

CROWN HEIGHTS [WABC] — Eyewitness News has obtained dramatic video of an out-of-control New York City bus barreling down a Brooklyn street, crashing into cars and weaving a path of destruction.

Six passengers on that bus had to be treated for injuries after the crash.

Shluchim Among Semifinalists for Jewish Community Hero
