Chana Paris and her husband, Rabbi Zalman Paris, the head of the Chabad of TriBeCa, in Duane Park, the spot where they originally planned to build a sukkah.

As the holidays bear down on this city, the war on faith has arrived early. The latest chapter in the religious wars takes place in TriBeCa. Community leaders there went positively postal over a request to the Parks Department by the Jewish group Chabad — to erect a sukkah in tiny Duane Park.

In 1991, Rabbi Shlomo and Miriam Bentolila arrived in the former Zaire – now the Democratic Republic of the Congo – to direct what is today Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa. Headquarters for Jewish communities ranging from 100 to 1,000 strong across a wide swath of the continent, the operation now serves approximately 12 African countries, and over the past 20 years, its footprint and role in the region has grown to better serve the individual needs of Israeli expatriates, European businessmen and women, American travellers, and locally-born Jews.

As some of you may know, this week is a big week for us Children of Abraham. It’s Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur, our big holidays, when even if you don’t do another Jewish thing all year, you gotta do this. We used to hate it as kids, having to go to services FOUR WHOLE TIMES in the space of about 10 days. I guess as you get older, you don’t mind so much – either because you like the ritual or because you’re getting close to your “Use By” date and you want to have all the bases covered.

Kfar Chabad resident Sara Kochava Karavani planned to spend Rosh Hashanah at home, with her family. Shortly before candle lighting on erev Rosh Hashanah she developed a sudden and strong nasal bleed. After it was apparent that it was not stopping, she went to Assaf HaRofeh Hospital in Rishon L’Tzion for treatment.

MANCHESTER, England [CHI] — Friendship Circle volunteer buddies and the residents of Langdon College and Community brightened up the days of the residents of Parklands, Newlands and Heathlands old age homes last week when they delivered their home made Rosh Hashannah gift bags.

Team Friendship to Enter the ING Miami Marathon

“Team Friendship,” a group of ten runners hosted by Friendship Circle International in the ING New York City Marathon in 2010, brought in substantial publicity and over $17,000 to support the mission of several regional Friendship Circle establishments across the USA. This year, Team Friendship is already headed for a strong start in the fundraising for ING NYC Marathon 2011 and expects to double the amount they raised in 2010.

She is survived by her husband Rabbi Gedalya Korf, her children: Rabbi Yossi (Crown Heights), Rabbi Yankie (Crown Heights), Sara Kessler (Montreal, Canda), Rabbi Sholom Ber (Delray Beach, FL), Dini Ciment (Boynton Beach, FL) and Rabbi Alter (S. Petersburg, FL) as well as her siblings: Yankel Winter (Crown Heights), Sara Feigelstock (Montreal, Canada), and Chaya Gansburg (Crown Heights).
