L.A. Diamond Daveners Hold Presidential Election

This Motzei Shabbos Parshas Lech Lecha, close to 150 boys and girls of Anash families in Los Angeles will gather to elect their Presidential Officials and Secretary of State as they cast their ballots during an evening of Presidential Debates. As in the past 10 years, each year the Mispallelim and Mispallelos of Kol Yakov Yehuda, the Rebbe’s Diamond Daveners of Los Angeles, choose a few of their own to lead their Jr. Congregation – the Shul for the kids, by the Kids.

Seven narcotics investigators are convicted of planting drugs on people to meet arrest quotas. Eight current and former patrol officers are charged with smuggling guns into the state. Another is charged with making a false arrest, apparently as a favor for his cousin. Three more are convicted of robbing a perfume warehouse.

Last weekend’s freak snowstorm brought down trees across the Northeast, including in West Orange, N.J.

The earliest snowstorm on record since the Civil War hit Saturday afternoon. Before long, the flakes piled up on trees, weighing down branches until they snapped into yards and toppled onto main roads. Then – for hundreds of thousands of residents of people across New Jersey, New York and Connecticut – the lights went out.

Op-Ed: ‘Chabad Lite’

In Lubavitch there is the phenomenon of the so called “Chabad Lite” community. People who grew up as Lubavitchers, consider themselves Lubavitchers, but do nothing to actually be Lubavitch. They don’t dress like the way a Lubavitcher would dress, speak the way one would speak, or act in the basic way a chossid would act. In general, I have no issue with these types of people; many of them are my friends and neighbors and we get along wonderfully. I have one major issue: they consider themselves Lubavitch, and take part in our mosdos.

‘Residents Only’ Parking Bill Approved by Committee

Every Crown Heights resident who doesn’t own a driveway or garage is familiar with the scene: Arriving home at last after a long day, only to end up circling the neighborhood looking for a parking spot for longer than it took to drive home. Today, a City Council committee voted to help end this situation. Opponents to the bill, however, say it will make it almost impossible to find parking when visiting elsewhere in the city, and is just another scheme for the city to increase ticket revenue.

President Barack Obama had no reservations attempting to block the execution of Humberto Leal Garcia, a Mexican man that was convicted in 1994 of the rape and murder of a 16-yearold girl in San Antonio. On July 5, 2011, The Guardian reported that: “The White House has asked the US Supreme Court to put the execution of Humberto Leal Garcia on hold while Congress passes a law that would prevent the convicted rapist and murderer from being put to death along with dozens of other foreign nationals who were denied proper access to diplomatic representation before trials for capital crimes.”
