Code of Jewish Law, Laws of Shabbos, Chapter 329: If non-Jews besiege a Jewish border town — whether in the Holy Land or in the Diaspora — stating that they come only to pilfer straw, Jews are obligated to arm themselves for war, even on Shabbos, because such an intrusion opens up the entire Jewish land to attack.

Since then, we’ve been blessed with a beautiful baby girl, who brings much light and joy into our new home. But, one thing has changed for the worse since this wonderful gift has come into our lives: every Shabbos, my wife and I are stuck in our apartment, as if it has become our jail cell.

Uncovering Chabad in Cancun

by Kristen Tywan

Rabbi Mendel Druk does outreach in Cancun, Mexico.

It’s ironic that after growing up so close to the large Jewish community in Skokie, Illinois that I would finally get my Jewish education from a Hasidic Rabbi in Cancun, Mexico. The Jewish community that I stumbled across in Cancun is an oasis of familiarity for Jews in Mexico. Not only do Rabbi Mendel Druk and his wife Rebbetzin Rachel Druk provide one of the only kosher meals in Cancun; they also offer an opportunity for their fellow Jews to reconnect with their faith and heritage by bringing them closer to each other and to God.
