The laws of Tzara’at—the biblical skin disease that affected gossipers and slanderers in ancient times, rendering them ritually impure – contain an intriguing anomaly. On the one hand the well-versed sage, not necessarily a Kohan (priest), is empowered to analyze the skin condition to determine whether or not it is Tzara’at.
