NYPD Gets Oversight with First Ever Inspector General

An official who oversees Washington D.C. police has been named the first ever inspector general of the New York Police Department.

Philip Eure (yur) was named Friday. He starts in May and will oversee staff of 50.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that Philip Eure has decades of law enforcement experience and is an excellent choice to serve as New York City’s first NYPD Inspector General

He’s been head of the District of Columbia’s Office of Police Complaints.

The New York City Council overrode former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto to create the watchdog position. It also passed a law making it easier for people to sue over stop-and-frisk.

Besides responding to the outcry over stop-and-frisk, the new laws were propelled by concern about the NYPD’s extensive surveillance of Muslims.

Department of Investigation Commissioner Mark Peters had been given until April 1 to find an IG.

So he won’t actually clean up the NYPD’s abuse of their power, their excessive force and harassment of innocent citizens. He’s just there so that the one good thing the NYPD’s doing in regard to terrorism will get stopped as well. Great Job New York! Not only will you continue to have criminal cops running around terrorizing you, but you’ll also be more vulnerable to Islamist terrorism. I say that’s a 2 for 1 deal if there was any. Elect these politicians and get what you deserve.

  • Wink wink, nod nod

Don’t get your hopes up about the NYPD, it’s all PR. Especially if De Blasio has anything to do with it.

  • Stop quotas and abuse

Until the IG punishes those responsible for the ticket quotas, and arrests cops who use excessive force when not warranted, he won’t be worth his weight in spittle.

  • No kidding

Now I can sleep better, knowing someone from WASHINGTON D.C. is coming over. Phew!

Come on, who’re we kidding? Will cops stop focusing all their attention on ticketing and tormenting us, and instead on real crimes? Wake me up when that happens, until then, zzzz….

  • Skeptical until proven effective

Will they double the ticket quotas now, or will there be even more cops now roaming Crown Heights streets looking for cars to give tickets to?

  • How long until we judge

How long should we wait after May until we make a judgement on how effective the IG is? Cause I think we should give him a chance, at least for a few months, before we arrive to a conclusion.
