The Algemeiner unveiled its 4th annual “J100” list of top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life” on Monday night, at a star-studded gala in New York City. Honorees in attendance included President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman, Israeli artist Yaacov Agam and activists Stuart and Robbi Force.
The President of France, Emanuel Macron, delivered a message for the French community living in New York. After his speech, the president spoke for a couple of minutes with Rabbi Mikhael Cohen, director of the French Jewish Community Center of New York, wishing him in Hebrew “Shana Tova” and to transmit the message to the Jewish community.
For the tenth year in a row, a group of Shluchim and Mekurovim from Moscow accompanied the chief rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, to New York to spend the Shabbos of Selichos in the Rebbe’s ‘Daled Amos.’
It is forbidden on a holiday to do any act in preparation for the following day, even if the following day is Shabbat. However, the sages created a halachic device, called an eruv tavshilin, which allows one to cook food on a holiday day for use on a Shabbat that immediately follows it.
The Bochurim of Oholei Torah Mesivta were tested on the laws of blowing Shofar by Rabbi Moshe Klein, who brought with him five shofars belonging to the Rebbe Maharash, the Friedikeh Rebbe, Reb Levi Yitzchok – the Rebbe’s father – and two shofars that belonged to the Rebbe for them to see.
Guests visiting Crown Heights for the months of the High Holidays partook in the ‘first’ Farbregen of Tishrei. Hundreds packed into the Kolel study hall and farbrenged with Rabbi Shlomo WIlhelm, Shliach in Zhitomir, Ukraine, who shared memories from time he merited to spend in the presence of the Rebbe.
Chabad of South Broward hosted their 36th Annual Dinner this past Motzai Shabbos, with dinner proceeds benefiting those still affected by Hurricane Harvey, which has left 10,000’s still without power. Following the dinner the congregation recited the customary Slichos at 1:15am.
Vaad Talmidei Hatmimim, who oversee the physical and spiritual well-being of thousands of guests over the month of Tishrei, provide for all their needs – including three meals a day at the Seudas Eliyahu lunchroom in Oholei Torah.
Hosting and providing for the needs thousands of Bocurim over the months of Elul and Tishrei is no small undertaking, and organizers from Vaad Talmidei Hatmimim began coordinating with the various Yeshivos months in advance. Many of those guests began arrived over the past few days and have received their respectful accommodations.
The Montreal Anash community gathered for a fabrengen to mark the end of the 50th year since the Rebbe instituted the Tefillin campaign. The Farbrengen was organized by Shmuel Zalmanov, and featured as a guest speaker Rabbi Mendel Kaplan of Chabad – Flamingo, Ontario.

On Monday 20th of Ellul, in the presence of delegations of distinguished local and foreign guests, sponsors and dignitaries, the Ukrainian Jewish community celebrated the grand opening of the newly refurbished building of Yeshivas Lubavitch Ukraine. Located in the thriving city of Dnepr, the Yeshiva services the children of Ukrainian and International shluchim.

The famed photographer Reb Levi Yitzchak Freidin is known for his most amazing footage he took during his visits of Tishrei by the Rebbe. In fact, he would produce a documentary each year containing the highlights of his footage, and have it shown at a grand viewing in Eretz Yisroel. After Freidin’s passing, JEM acquired his highlight footage shown in Israel.
Just in time for the new year, one of Crown Heights’ favorite establishments — the delectible Gombo’s Bakery — debuted a fresh new look.
Two nooses were discovered hanging from trees in the Crown Heights area, and the NYPD is investigating both incidents as possible hate crimes against the African-American community.
