When a member of Sarah Alevsky‘s community in the Upper West Side sought to withdraw their daughter from their Hebrew school, it was over over their desire to have her learn to read from, and get called up to the Torah – something which they considered a right of passage – Mrs. Alvesky authored a response to allay her concerns.

1 Million Pounds of Shmurah Matzah: How Passover Production Continues to Rise
Passover is around the corner, and handmade shmurah matzah is starting to pop up on supermarket shelves. Before long, it’ll be everywhere—from Costco to the White House. Demand for the traditional, round matzah has grown at a rapid rate in the last 60 years, and according to a survey conducted by Chabad.org, more than 1 million pounds of the handmade variety will be produced in the United States alone. To meet the growing demand, matzah bakeries around the world begin baking shmurah matzah as early as October, producing batches of the tasty, smoking discs.

With sadness we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Esther Bukiet OBM, wife of the chossid Reb Chaim Meir Bukiet and matriarch to a large family of chassidim and Shluchim. She was 92 years old.

Final Days of JLI’s Land & Spirit Tour of Israel
120 shluchim and shluchos along with 770 Chabad House community members arrived in Israel last week to participate in JLI’s Land and Spirit Israel Experience. The group, traveling from across the US, Canada, Australia, as well as from Central and South America, is the largest group to visit Israel this year.

Weekly Story: Beyond the Letter of the Law
The custom is that the kallah presents her chosson with a tallis. When we don the tallis we recite four passages from Tehillim (Psalms) chapter 36, and the final passage is; “Bestow Your kindness upon those who know You, and [bring out] Your righteousness to those with an upright heart.”

Shliach Dances with Students after Campus BDS Motion Fails
A motion supportive of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel was voted down at the University of Ottawa on Tuesday, marking the tenth successive failure for the movement on Canadian campuses. Initially the motion was erroneously announced as passed, only to be corrected ten minutes later, leading Shliach Rabbi Chaim Boyarsky to break out in dance with fellow Jewish students.

Shabbos at the Besht: Is there Only One Shulchan Aruch?
This Shabbos at the Besht, Rabbi Yossi Newfield, who attended Lubavitch yeshivas, including the Heichal Menachem-Smicha Program, in Melbourne, Australia. He lectures on Jewish topics, primarily at senior residences in the Tri-State area, and will lead a discussion on the topic of “Is there Only One Shulchan Aruch?”
