For Chabad.org, Failure is not an Option

Jpost

“These days I look upon you as my own personal rabbi,” wrote Roger H., in an e-mail to the Ask the Rabbi team at Chabad.org, a popular Internet site for Jewish content. “You have never forgotten me and every time you write I feel as if my soul has been kindled anew.”

In this post-modern age of virtual reality, in which Jews are not the only world citizens and extreme individualism has resulted in the disintegration of communities, a good Internet site sometimes stands in for a concrete synagogue and a flesh-and blood rabbi, especially in places where there are none.

ENCINITAS, CA — About 100,000 Jews live in San Diego County, yet at least 70 percent are unaffiliated with any formal Jewish institution, said Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort of Chabad at La Costa.

“That’s a big problem,” the rabbi said. “There is something wrong, some disconnect.”

Regulators Grant Con Edison a $523.4 Million Increase in Delivery Rates

NY Times

NEW YORK — State regulators on Tuesday approved a $523.4 million one-year increase in Consolidated Edison’s rates for delivering electric service. Typical residential customers will see an increase in their monthly bill of about $6 in New York and about $8 in Westchester County.

Critics of the utility decried the decision, saying it would harm economically vulnerable customers as the region struggles through a recession. Con Edison said it was disappointed by the decision, saying there was not enough money for essential infrastructure maintenance.

The State Public Service Commission also authorized raising $198 million through a temporary surcharge on bills to pay for state-mandated assessments, for a total increase of $721.4 million. The overall increase on electricity bills will be 6.1 percent across the Con Edison system.

Zelda: Remembering an Israeli Poet

by Baila Olidort – lubavitch.com

Among the poets in Israel’s literary circles, many quietly remembered Zelda Schneurson Mishkovsky on Tuesday (April 21) 27 Nissan. That Zelda, as she was simply called, died (in 1984) on the same day designated by the state of Israel as Holocaust Remembrance day, is in itself poetic; her poetry, for which she received the Bialik and Brenner Prizes in literature, speaks of death and darkness but also of renewal and transcendence.

Born in Ukraine in 1914, Zelda was the daughter Rabbi Sholom Shlomo and Rachel Schneurson. Her father was a brother of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, making Zelda first cousins with the Rebbe.

Zelda’s mother Rachel, was the daughter of a distinguished Chasid, Rabbi Dovid Tzvi Chen, who also descended from a long line of Chabad rabbis. In 1928, she immigrated with her family to Israel. Her father died shortly afterwards. In 1950, at age 36, she married Chayim Aryeh Mishkovsky.
