Purim Celebrants to be Subject to Random Shalach Manos Searches

WASHINGTON, D.C. — [TheKnish.com] Responding to “a possible threat of terror,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced Monday that Jewish children will be subject to random shalach manos searches this Purim season.

“Individuals concealing their identities through clever disguise and under cover of night – even though you can’t be mikayim the mitzvah then – may attempt to use the unspecified threat of shalach manos to extort dollar bills from unsuspecting victims,” Chertoff said. “Such scare tactics may have been tolerated in the past, but they will not be allowed to continue this Purim.”

National Guard troops and local police are being stationed at checkpoints in residential neighborhoods to seize the contents of any paper bags, wicker baskets, giant cellophane monstrosities or other receptacles. Additionally, marzipan-sniffing dogs will be posted at regular intervals to locate and devour suspicious items.

Police Car Involved in Serious Accident

At around 1:30am this morning, a police car that was just getting underway in response to an emergency and had yet to turn on his lights and sirens, ran the light at the intersection of Troy Ave. and E. New York Ave. and slammed into a passing vehicle, sending it flying onto the nearby sidewalk, and shattering the passenger side of the car. The police car sustained quite some damage as well, sending both Officers to a nearby Hospital.

The driver, a black woman, was quite shaken up but said to have been ok, in a short conversation with the driver she said that as she was crossing the intersection all of a sudden heard a massive bang then feeling herself loose control of her car, noticing that she had just been hit, then all of a sudden the police car that hit her had its lights and sirens go off, and then shut off by an officer.

The cops were reported to have both been wearing their safety belts and are both ok. Police are investigating if the police car had been adhering to emergency traffic protocols, and if the civilian driver had itself obeyed traffic laws, no summonses have been issued.

Minivan Window Broken Into On Eastern Parkway

At around 11:30pm yesterday volunteers at the Oholei Torah PTA were making the Shalach Manot for today in the new wing of Oholei Torah, when one of the volunteers heard her car alarm go off right outside, but didn’t pay much attention to it. When she was leaving about a half an hour later she noticed that one of the window had been smashed.

The police were called, and a report was filed, afterwards going through the car to see if anything was actually stolen, only to find that nothing had been taken.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you all to take care and not leave anything in your car they may give a reason to smash your window, and if you are the victim of such an incident, please don’t be lazy and inform the police and file a report. A crime not reported is a crime that didn’t happen.
