Weekly Story: Never Extinguished

A few weeks ago was the 30th International March Of The Living in Poland, which was attended by tens of thousands. Many of them were survivors of the holocaust and/or their family members, while others were just concerned individuals. Rabbi Nissan Mangel, one of the youngest survivors of numerous concentration camps was a featured speaker throughout the event. This past Shabbos, parshas Tazria-metzorah, he related one of the more powerful and moving moments.

Moshe considered himself very fortunate. The local Poritz (squire) had hired him to manage all of his estates. Not only would his personal financial stability improve, but as the manager, he would now be in a position to hire and help many other Jews in the community. They would no longer have to bribe the officials in order to lease an inn or to acquire any other license.

A chossid from Vitebsk once came to the Tzemach Tzedek and poured out his heart to him, unable to contain his anguish. “My only son received an order to present himself in front of the conscription office,” he cried. “The Rebbe knows how difficult it is to receive an exemption from the army draft, particularly this year, as they are even drafting young men who are their parents’ only son (although this used to be an automatic exemption). The problem is all that more acute since, Boruch Hashem, my son is strong and healthy, and the doctors will definitely declare him fit for the army. Rebbe, please save him!!”

27 years ago today, on the 28th of Nissan in 1991 the Rebbe delivered an impassioned talk about Moshiach. The address sparked concern among Chassidim motivating them to throw themselves into fulfilling the Rebbe’s vision of perfecting the world through Torah and Mitzvos with even greater vigor.
