I am the son of Rabbi Chaim Gutnick, who fled Europe during World War Two and made his way to Australia, where I was born. In his work as a community rabbi, my father was very much guided by the Rebbe, and I would like to relate here a few anecdotes which my father had shared with me.

Then the possuk states, this applies even if the man had two wives and by both of them their first child was a boy. However, the man loves the second wife more than the first and he desires to bequeath the double portion to the son of the wife he loves over the firstborn of his first wife.

I came to Chabad many years ago, but for me to say that is not accurate because, really, Chabad came to me. In 1970, while studying at the University of Buffalo, I attended a class on Jewish mysticism being taught by Rabbi Noson Gurary. As a result of that class, I became interested in finding out more about my roots and, during my last semester at college, I had my first encounter with the Rebbe.

Two months ago, I had the honor of meeting Reb Chaim Reisner, who has devoted the last twenty some years of his life to publicize the Rebbe’s call of publicizing the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach (the 7 Noachide laws). He told me, that in addition to what the Rebbe quoted from the Rambam about elevating the people of the world, he has seen that it arouses dormant memories and allows assimilated Jews to rediscover who they really are.

As a young man growing up in Ukraine during the 1920s, I got to know the Belzer Rebbe, Rabbi Aharon Rokeach, whom I came to revere. When the war broke out and I was drafted into the Russian Army, he assured me that I would survive and return safe and sound, which I did. In 1942, I was in the terrible Battle of Stalingrad, where I saw thousands of soldiers dying around me, but time and again, I survived due to incidents I can only describe as miracles.
