Next Generation of Bluegrass Rabbis Comes of Age in Kentucky

Much has changed in the last three decades for the Jewish community in Kentucky, as the Litvin family has spread their roots in a community they are proud to call home. Even after all this time, new developments are in the works. Take, for instance, a Jewish Learning Center that opens this week, which under its wide umbrella will offer adult-education classes throughout the year for working professionals, parents, retirees—for anyone who wants to further their Jewish knowledge.

Her plan: to join other women in Miami for a “Mega Challah Bake” workshop at a Chabad center in the downtown neighborhood of Brickell, where she would learn to properly mix, knead, shape and bake her very own challah while enjoying dips, salads and bread, and learning about the significance of the mitzvah.

Rabbi Mendy Traxler drives hours each week from Houston to various regional correctional facilities to spend time with Jewish inmates. He also organized a Chanukah event last year in front of Houston City Hall for more than 2,500 people. When asked about the long drives and impressive events, the program director at Chabad Outreach of Houston responds: “I guess we do everything Texas-sized.”
