An Open Letter From Avraham Fried

Dear Fellow Member of Anash:

I get to travel a lot. Wherever I go, people express their love for our Chabad Shluchim and Shluchos. Just recently, on a trip to Brazil, one businessman said to me “If only I could, I would send every Shliach a million dollars.”

Let’s face it; we can’t cover every Shliach’s budget but we can sure make their personal lives a bit more comfortable.

That’s why I’m writing to you today about Yad L’Shliach. On the first yahrzeit of my father, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe HaKohen Friedman ע”ה who would help Shluchim at every opportunity, my family launched a project to do just that – Help families on Shlichus.

Tonight: Tzeischem L’Sholom for 128 OT Bochurim

Tzom Gedaliah: Assassination of Gedaliah

Fast Ends at 7:22pm

Tishrei 3rd is a fast day mourning the assassination of the Jewish royal Gedaliah ben Achikam, governor of the Land of Israel for a short period following the destruction of the First Temple. Gedaliah’s killing spelled the end of the small remnant of a Jewish community that remained in the Holy Land after the destruction, which fled to Egypt. (According to many opinions, the assassination of Gedaliah actually occurred on Rosh Hashanah, but the commemoration of the event is postponed to the day after the festival).

The Fast of Shivah Asar B’Tamuz

Chabad.org & ColelChabad.org

The Fast Begins at 3:52am and ends at 9:07pm

Tomorrow is the fast of 17th of Tammuz, which is devoted to mourning the breaching of Jerusalem’s walls (and other tragic events that occurred on this day) and repenting and rectifying their causes. We refrain from eating and drinking. Special prayers and Torah readings are added to the day’s services.

The 17th of Tammuz also marks the beginning of “The Three Weeks”, a period of mourning which ends on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people.
Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed.
