Divine Time Management

R. Yosef Y. Jacobson – Algemeiner

“I do not expect from you to refrain from sin because of a lack of interest in sin; I want you to abstain from sin because of a lack of time for it.”
— Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kutzk, to his disciples.

“The world says, ‘Time is money.’ I say, ‘Time if life.’”
— Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, to my father, Gershon Jacobson in 1985.

Cheating on the Sabbath?

The marvelous invention of the Sabbath — a day in which we put our stressful lives on hold and dedicate every moment to our souls, our loved ones, and our spiritual growth — is introduced in this weeks portion, the opening section of the Bible.

“And G-d saw all that He had made , and, behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus, the heaven and the earth were completed, and all their array. G-d completed, on the seventh day, His work, which He had done, and He abstained on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. G-d blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He ceased from all His work (1).”

Chabad’s New Landscaping Marks End of Project

Cleveland Jewish News

Beachwood, OH — Workers this week were seeding a new front lawn and completing other necessary exterior tasks at the Waxman Chabad Center, which opened its doors last winter.

The Chabad Center on Green Road in Beachwood has been a work in progress since ground was broken over five years ago for the mikvah behind the main building. Since then, the city has received complaints about the construction project from Beachwood residents and non-residents, says Bill Griswold, acting Beachwood building commissioner.

A Chabad representative has assured him that a new contractor has been hired to redo the landscaping. “They suggest it will be completed by the end of the week,” Griswold says. “They are 99% complete.”

The Weekly Sedra – Bereshis

Most people, even Gentiles, are familiar with the opening sentence of the Torah: “IN THE BEGINNING G-D CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH”

But at first glance it has no practical importance.

What do we care how the world got created. or if it was created at all? In any case it happened thousands (maybe millions!) of years ago! Why can’t the Torah just be like the other religions and say that G-d rewards and punishes whoever doesn’t follow the rules? Who cares how the world got here?

But the teachings of Chassidut and Kabala reveal several vital messages here.

First of all, the Torah is telling us what the world is made of: that the basic element of creation is neither atoms nor quarks of energy or even spirit… all these are themselves creations.

Giving Sukkah On Four Wheels

Wanstead And Wood Ford Guardian

London, England – A Buckhurst Hill Rabbi has been touring the area in his Sukkah Mobile to bring home the message of a Jewish festival.

This week the Jewish community has been celebrating the festival of Tabernacles, which commemorates the Jewish Exodus from Egypt.

The exiled Jews built huts in the desert and Jewish people all over the world build their own replica huts to remember the occasion.

Because not all Jewish people are able to build their own huts Rabbi Odom Brandman, of the Chabad centre, Russell Road, has been touring schools and Jewish families in the area with his Sukkah Mobile – a hut on the back of a pick-up truck.

Illustrating That Looks Aren’t Everything

NEW YORK — Sometimes, all it takes to make good art is to point a finger — or a camera — at our world’s most telling peculiarities. That, at least, is how many leading artists feel these days: They believe that content, presented as transparently as possible, is what ought to matter most; artsy form can only interfere. Photographers Andrea Robbins and Max Becher have made a career of such telling transparency. Their razor-sharp photographs seem like nothing more than windows open on the strangeness in the world. It’s an effect that in itself demands an artful eye.

Simchas Torah Shlichus from Crown Heights

By Aliza Karp

The Arba Minim represent Jews with different characteristics all coming together. On Simchas Torah we put down the Arba Minim, signifying that our differences have now become nullified, and we dance together as one. But once inside 770, the people dancing together are people who are similar. How is the unity that transcends the Arba Minim applied to Jews who are not in 770?

TAHALUCHA! Tahalucha is Ahavas Yisroel. Tahalucha is Achdus. Tahalucha is Shlichus on Yom Tov. And most of the guys walking for hours hardly realize it. They go on Tahalucha because the Rebbe said to go. They make no Cheshboynos. And yet they are walking for hours to reach their destination, and then walking back. And they are doing it for Jews they have never met.
