Opportunity in Romania Lures Growing Numbers of Israelis

Rebecca Rosenthal – Lubavitch.com

Bucharest, Romania — Ideally, Chabad representatives to Romania would like to see Jews return to Israel. But for the growing numbers who opt to stay, Bucharest is experiencing a Jewish revival.

As Romanian society swings wide open to accommodate the recent embrace by the European Union, Jewish life in the former Eastern bloc country is experiencing a parallel sweeping change, with an influx of Israeli citizens and international businesspeople. In addition to the 15,000 Romanian Jews, Israelis have added another 10,000, according to estimates by Chabad representative, Rabbi Naftali Deutsch. Jewish embassy workers and investors riding the Romanian economic wave pump up the country’s Jewish population by another thousand or so.

Friendship and Leadership

Shluchim Office’s Friendship Circle Division organizing first-ever girls’ volunteer leadership Shabbaton

Brooklyn, NY — Since its launching twelve years ago in West Bloomfield, Michigan, the Friendship Circle has become a phenomenon. The Chabad-based volunteer program, which pairs service-minded Jewish teens with children with special needs, has spread to 10 American states and four countries since its 1994 inception. A current total of 3,850 volunteers now operate under the leadership of their local shluchim worldwide.

“I never believed the success would go this far,” says Rabbi Levi Shemtov, the Circle’s founder. “I guess we underestimated the power of selfless and dedicated teenagers.”

Neshei Chabad Retreat Aimed at all Jewish Women

Kansas City Jewish Chronicle

Overland Park, KS — Blumah Wineberg said that more than 50 years ago the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the late Rabbi Menachem M. Schneersohn, had the foresight to create the Lubavitch Woman’s Organization known as Neshei U’bnos Chabad.

The Rebbe maintained that women share the obligation to study and master the esoteric “soul” of Torah and thereby achieve knowledge, love and awe of God.

“At that point, he felt that women had tremendous power and ability to bring about change and have tremendous strength to tap into that for spiritual and physical well-being,” Wineberg said.

Wineberg, who serves as director of the local Neshei Chabad, said the national organization is still trying to nourish the souls of Jewish women. It will do so next week at its 45th annual Neshei U’bnos Chabad Convention, which will be held in Kansas City Friday through Sunday, Jan. 12-14, at the Hilton Airport Hotel. The weekend’s theme is “A Spa for the Body, Mind and Soul.” Similar conventions are also held in Europe, Israel and South America.

A Nation Apart — A Vayechi Essay

By Israel Krasnianski
— Dedicated in loving memory of my dear grandfather,
Meshulim Yochanon Krasnianski,
in honor of the anniversary of his passing, this past Wednesday, 13 Tevet —

“…If statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of stardust lost in the blaze of the Milky way. properly, the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world’s list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in this world, in all the ages; and had done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it.

Organizers are hoping to significantly increase last year’s inaugural summer of 180 kids at Camp Gan Israel in Running Springs.

The camp, a 70-acre site near Big Bear that Chabad purchased for $4.3 million two years ago, recently broke ground on a 10,000-square-foot multipurpose building and has invested another $1.5 million in other improvements, including a newly remodeled synagogue, enlarged dining hall, kitchen improvements, a game room and upgraded air conditioning, bathrooms and carpets.

Winterbreak Ski Retreat Allows Students to Explore Their Jewish Identities

Jennifer Anne Perez – Chabad.edu

When college student Allison Singer saw the fliers for Winterbreak, a California ski and learn retreat organized by a group of Chabad on Campus emissaries, she had zero plans to attend. But that was before circumstances – and perhaps more than a little bit of divine intervention – got her up that mountain.

“I didn’t have the time to go on the trip at first,” says Singer, a 20-year-old University of California at Santa Barbara student. “Then my car broke down. Because my car broke down, I lost my job. All of a sudden I had plenty of time on my hands.”

Cartoon Riles Readers and Officials

The Jewish Exponent

Philadelphia, PA — Arnold Soslow wasn’t amused when he read an editorial cartoon in a recent edition of the Northeast Times. In fact, Soslow, 68, of Northeast Philadelphia, said he was appalled.

“To me, it was anti-Semitic,” said Soslow, calling the cartoonist’s spoof of the recent Seattle Christmas tree debacle “offensive and inaccurate.” He added, “That just hit home a little bit.”

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Vayechi

The Rebbe says:

1. In this week’s Parshah Ya’akov Avinu (our father) blesses each one of his 12 children (Chapter 49, Verses 1 through 28).

When Ya’akov Avinu blesses his son Asher he says “From Asher- his bread is rich, he will provide kingly delicacies” (Chapter 49, Verse 20).

Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki) explains this blessing and says: The food which comes from the land that Asher received as an inheritance is rich and fat because there are many olives in his portion which give oil like a spring. As we see that Moshe Rabbeinu (our teacher) also blessed Asher by saying “and he will (even be able to) dip his feet in oil”.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Vayechi – Let’s Not Sell Ourselves Short

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL

Please speak in the ears of the people: Let each man request of his fellow and each woman from her fellow silver vessels and gold vessels.– Exodus 11:2

G-d asked Moses to make a special effort to prevail upon the Jews to request valuables from their Egyptian neighbors, because unless they did so, the soul of Abraham would have a grievance against G-d. He would say that G-d carried out in full measure the prophecy that his offspring would be oppressed, but not the companion promise that the Jews would leave their captivity with great wealth (Genesis 15:14-15). To forestall this, G-d pleaded, as it were, with Moses to prevail upon the Jews to request valuables from the Egyptians – Rashi from Midrash

“Yaakov never died,” declares the Talmud: “Just as his progeny is alive, so too is he alive.” This revolutionary assertion may be understood on multiple levels, the most basic of which is the idea that the righteous live on through the perpetuation of their progeny and accomplishments.
