Melbourne, Australia — An Ocean Grove footballer has been convicted and fined $1000 for abusing a Jewish businessman.

Magistrate Barbara Cotterell earlier blasted footballer Simon Phillip Christian’s “extremely racist” behaviour when he was part of an alleged race hate attack last year.

Chabad Responds to Tragedy With Mitzvah Drive: “Week of Goodness and Kindness” to Begin Friday

Blacksburg, VA — As a university and nation began the transition from shock to mourning one day after the deadliest shooting attack in American history, the network of more than 100 campus Chabad Houses declared a “Week of Goodness and Kindness” as a way to honor the memory of the slain. The goal of the effort, according to organizers, is simple: to translate the pain of grief into the healing of positive action.

Yekaterinbureg, Russia — Over 2,000 people participated in the six seders that were organized throughout the city last week, which to most, were a shining example of the growth of the Jewish community in the Urals. With the large number of participants following strict kosher requirements, community members began food preparations a week ahead of time.

Shortly after the devastating news broke of the massacre at Virginia Tech, the family of Professor Liviu Librescu was notified of his death. The 75-year-old Holocaust survivor sacrificed his life to save his students.

The family immediately contacted the ZAKA Organization in Eretz Yisroel to help expedite the release of the niftar, who in turn advised the family to contact Rabbi Isaac Lieder in Monsey, NY.

Rabbi Lieder quickly contacted the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, Virginia, and explained that the professor was Jewish and Jewish law prohibits performing an autopsy on a deceased person. They guaranteed Rabbi Lieder that even though they were dealing with the largest investigation of a shooting on US soil, there would in fact be no autopsy, just a minimally invasive procedure to remove the bullets, followed by a few x-rays.

Scottsdale Chabad Plans new Mikvah

Scottsdale, AZ — Chabad of Scottsdale plans on building a mikvah, or ritual bath, this year to offer Valley Jews a convenient place to perform the mitzvah of tevilas keilim (immersion of vessels). It will not be used for taharat ha-mishpacha (family purity).

USG will not Take Sides over Chabad

Princeton, NJ — Following extensive debate last night, the USG Senate voted down a resolution urging President Tilghman to reconsider the denial of University chaplaincy to Chabad Rabbi Eitan Webb.

“We weren’t elected to pass resolutions that reflect our own views,” USG president Rob Biederman ’08 said. “It would be irresponsible if we took sides on issues that are not clear cut.” He added that the USG, as a rule, refrains from supporting resolutions on divisive issues.

Passover Seder in Samarkand

Samarkand, Uzbekistan — A community Seder was held for Samarkand’s Jewish community to celebrate Passover last week at Orh Avner Sunday School. Over 200 people gathered around the table to read the Hagadah and get the chance to meet with friends some rarely get the chance to see. This year, at the Ohr Avner funded Seder, one of the most notable restaurants in town was made kosher under Samarkand’s chief Rabbi Isaac Jacobson for the event.

Slain Israeli Professor Saved Others in Va. Tech Massacre

Blacksburg, VA — As Israel observed Holocaust Day, thousands of miles away, A Rumanian-born Holocaust survivor gave his life in another senseless murder – and apparently in an act of heroism.

Among the 32 people killed by a lone gunman at Virginia Tech Monday is 77-year-old engineering professor, Liviu Librescu, a citizen of Israel. According to eyewitness accounts, Librescu ran to the door of his classroom and blocked it with his body – preventing the gunman from entering but getting shot to death himself as a result.

JLI Students Take Lesson Outside of the Classroom

Brooklyn, NY — On Sunday, March 25 a group of students from the University of Pennsylvania visited Crown Heights, Brooklyn as part of the Rohr JLI Jewish Essentials course now being offered on several campuses. The field trip consisted of several components, including visits to a matzah bakery, the headquarters of the OK Kosher Laboratories and discussions with prominent Chasidic rabbis.

Hatzalah Member Involved in Serious Accident

Brooklyn, NY – At around 5:00pm yesterday, Sunday afternoon a very serious accident took place at the intersection of Remsen and Avenue B. Eye witnesses say that they had observed the Hatzalah member driving at outrageous speeds before blowing through the intersection without slowing down for the red light and collided with a red Lexus.

In 1997 Nechama Leiter (nee Brand), the daughter of Nochum and Chana, passed away at the tender age of 32. Nechama was a caring, gifted person who was very particular in the mitzvah of tznius. She was a picture of grace and elegance and it is in her memory that Nechama’s Closet was established.

For the past nine years Nechama’s Closet has successfully helped countless kallahs and women with Sheva Brochos, Shabbos and Yom Tov clothing. We have recently started providing sheitels for kallahs and women.

16 Years to the Sicha – “Do All That You Can”

Today, Chof Ches Nissan marks 16 years to the Sicha the Rebbe said unexpectedly in 5751 after returning from the Ohel. The Rebbe said with great pain “that all that I have done… it is up to you to do all that you can to bring Moshiach down here…” AD MOSAI?!
