Laurie Zimmet Speaks at Chabad of UNF

Jacksonville, FL — April 29, 2007 — On an unordinary Sunday evening at Rabbi Shmuli Novack’s Chabad house in Southside Jacksonville, University of North Florida students and members of the Jacksonville Jewish community gathered to hear a compelling account—that of an American soldier fighting in the Iraq War, but also the story of a woman persevering as a Jew in the United States Navy. Laurie Zimmet began her lecture with a disclaimer: she in no way intended to speak as a Naval Lieutenant tonight. Rather, she spoke to the Jews gathered at Rabbi Novack’s house as a fellow. Though Zimmet acknowledged her trying and sometimes tragic experience while on her second tour in Iraq, she mainly spoke with a gleam in her eyes and a smile on her face while she led the audience through a year on the Jewish calendar in the Navy.

Defying Disabilities

Stacey Palevsky Jewish SF

San Mateo, CA — San Mateo’s Chabad smelled like the unusual combination of Elmer’s glue and butter on a rainy Monday afternoon. Safety scissors scraped against paper. Children giggled as they kneaded sugar cookie dough in preparation for an upcoming holiday.

Their workspace looked different than the typical Hebrew school class. A teacher you’d expect to stand front and center explaining the aleph-bet? Absent.

Ra’anana, Israel — As the Librescu family completed its final days of sitting shiva for their slain husband and father, a representative of the Chabad on Campus National Foundation presented them with a book of more than 1,450 condolences. The well-wishes – some from as far away as India and written in a smattering of languages, including Professor Liviu Librescu’s native Romanian – were submitted to a page on the Chabad on Campus Web site, www.Chabad.edu, that went online less than a day after last week’s April 16 shooting rampage on the Blacksburg, Va., campus of Virginia Tech that left 32 students and faculty dead.

Show Me the Light

Three-year-old Mira Schusterman gets ready
for Shabbat with a prayer book, a tzedakah
box and her own candlestick, etched with her
Hebrew name, Mirel, given in memory of her
great-grandmother.

Atlanta, GA — On Friday night at sundown, Jewish women around the world pause amid the hubbub of Shabbat preparations to light candles to welcome the Sabbath bride. The image of a woman kindling Shabbat candles is an age-old symbol of Judaism.

While men may light Shabbat candles, it is typically the woman’s responsibility for several reasons. Among them: The Jewish women, not the men, first agreed to accept the Torah at Mount Sinai, so women transmit the essence of our Jewish heritage into the home. One way to do that is by lighting Shabbat candles, bringing light into the home just as Israel was chosen by God to be a light among the nations.
