Computer Causes Fire in a CH Building

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — At around 1:00 in the afternoon today a fire broke out in an apartment on the first floor of 706 Eastern Parkway. The apartment was that of the superintended of the building who told CrownHeights.info that he was using his computer when smoke started coming out of it and before he knew it the whole room was engulfed in flames and smoke.

Russian Police Officers Gain Insight into Jewish Community

Ufa, Russia – A conference for representatives of law enforcement agencies has just wrapped up in Russia, but this one is like no event previously held. This event was organized and sponsored by the Chief Rabbinate of Russia. More than 1,000 police officers from across the country attended lectures on the history of the Jewish people in Russia and internationally.

Seak Beach, CA, June 21 — On a recent spring evening, Southland seniors took a trip down memory lane as Chabad of Los Alamitos hosted an evening of classic black and white Yiddish cinema. The event gave the older audience a chance to enjoy some rarely seen classics and share an evening of kinship with fellow Jewish seniors. This Yiddish film festival is part of Chabad’s ongoing effort to embrace one of California’s most valuable natural resources: senior citizens.

Moscow Jewish Community Hosts Deputy Mayor

Moscow, Russia — The Jewish community of Moscow hosted a high profile visit by a top official from the Moscow City Administration. Vladimir Resin, the First Deputy Mayor and Head of the capital’s construction agency, engaged in a tour of numerous local Jewish institutions this past week.

This excursion involved a visit to the building of the Jewish Charity Center ‘Shaarey Tzedek’, which is still under construction, a number of Jewish educational institutions, and the construction site of the Jewish Museum of Tolerance. During this time, he was accompanied by Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar and Aleksander Boroda, Chairman of the board of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.

End of the Year Banquet At YNS Tzfas

Tzfat, Israel — This past Thursday YNS held its end of the year banquet at the home of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Orimland.

Anchorage, AK — In a US state whose entire population is roughly equal to Tel Aviv’s and whose capital cannot be reached by road, the small Jewish community has strengthened its roots with the planned construction of the Alaska Jewish Historical Museum.

Jewish Coming-of-Age Marked in Zhitomir

Zhitomir, Ukraine — The Synagogue of Zhitomir celebrated a special occasion this week with the Bar Mitzva of Menachem Mendel, the oldest son of Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, the city’s Chief Rabbi and Chabad Lubavitch emissary.

The young man approached the Torah scroll and answered all the questions traditionally asked on this occasion, after which everyone enjoyed a wonderful kosher dinner. Among the numerous guests were many from elsewhere in Ukraine, who had the opportunity to meet with one another, strengthen friendly bonds, share their experiences, and answer each other’s questions.

American Chabad on Campus Breaks 100 Center Milestone

Stamford, CT — Speaking at the banquet of the annual conference of Chabad on Campus emissaries Thursday night, philanthropist and international businessman George Rohr announced an historic slate of nine new campus projects, effectively bringing the number of universities served by the Chabad-Lubavitch movement to 130 worldwide.

More than 100 are now in the United States alone.

New Shluchim to Alberta, Canada

Rabbi Dovid and Mrs Chanie (nee Matusof) Altein have just moved on Shlichus to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they have joined the administrative staff at Chabad Lubavitch of Alberta, Canada. Rabbi Altein will also direct the newly established Friendship Circle. The Alteins were appointed by Rabbi Menachem Matusof, Executive Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Alberta.
