Columns from a Holocaust-era Torah scroll in the possession of a Utah antique dealer now grace the wall of a Salt Lake City Chabad House. The Jewish center recently restored the scroll after a congregant found it in his friendís store.

A few months ago I stood by the Rebbe’s Ohel and cried from the depths of my heart. I cried tears of happiness, tears of fulfillment because I was on my way to fulfilling my life long dream. Local Chabad rabbis are distancing themselves from the comments of an Israeli Chabad rabbi who last week said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials should be “hanged from the gallows.”

The remarks by Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe led to widespread condemnation in Israel and calls on the attorney general to open an investigation into whether the remarks constitute incitement. The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America issued a statement, saying the Jan. 1 remarks “are beyond the pale of legitimate democratic protest and have no basis in Jewish law or hashkafa [philosophy].”

Ukraine Seminar Prepares Jewish Youth Leaders

DONETSK, Ukraine –- In eastern Ukraine, the Jewish community of Donetsk have concluded it latest seminar. Held from January 6th through 8th, this educational opportunity involved Jewish women, aged 14 and 15 years old. Sponsored and run by the Avi Chai Foundation.

The event, which was facilitated by Anna Skobeleva, a representative of the ‘Avi Chai’ Foundation in Minsk, was met with a strong turnout of young enthusiasts. The ‘Junior’ program is aimed at preparing counselors for Jewish camps, as well as leaders for the various youth initiatives organized by Jewish communities across the Former Soviet Union.
