Shomrim Apprehends Shoplifter

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — At around 6:30 this evening the Shomrim hotline received a call from a worker at the Kingston Bargain Center located on Kingston between Crown and Carroll about a woman who just ran out of the store with items in her purse.

A large number of members responded and began spreading out in the area and spotted the perpetrator more then 4 blocks away from the store on Crown St and Schenectady Ave, upon approaching the woman she immediately admitted to the theft and police were called.

Boy Mugged for 25 Cents on Eastern Parkway

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — A boy walking home from the day camp he attends, ‘Gan Menachem’ earlier this afternoon was accosted by two Black males on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue who demanded his money, all the boy had on him was a single quarter which he handed to them.

visited the St. Charles area recently to
help rekindle Jewish connections.

St. Louis, MO — Just as many students took John F. Kennedy’s challenge to serve their country by assisting people from developing countries in the Peace Corps, two Jewish student rabbis were on a similar mission in St. Charles for the Jewish Peace Corps.

Mordy Dinerman and Baruch Davidson, both 23, are rabbinic interns from New York who have been helping rekindle Jewish connections in the St. Charles area for the past two-and-a-half weeks.

The two students are part of a summer visitation program with the Jewish Peace Corps and Chabad of Greater St. Louis.

The event involved 33 youth from 13 different settlements across Russia and Ukraine, some of whom attended such an event for the first time. Many others were glad to meet up with friends they made at last year’s gathering.

Moshiach Campaign Hires New Director

Brooklyn, NY — Rabbi Chaim Hershkowitz has been appointed Director of the International Moshiach Campaign by the Moshiach Vaad of the International Kinus HaShluchim, under Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and a division of the Shluchim Office. In making the announcement Vaad Hakinus Chairman, Rabbi Moshe Wilansky stated, “We are very excited to have Rabbi Hershkowitz involved with the International Moshiach Campaign. We feel that he will help us build on all that we have accomplished to date, and take this office to the next level, ‘l’havei l’yimos ha’Moshiach’.”

Steam Pipe Explosion Jolts Midtown

A steam pipe explosion beneath a street near Grand Central Terminal yesterday propelled a giant scalding jet of brownish steam toward the sky, sending commuters who had been heading home stampeding to safety.

Officials said that one person died and more than 30 were hurt, two of them critically. The city said that three firefighters and one police officer were among the injured.
