Special: Pirsum Rishon Pictures of the Rebbe

Today, Gimmel Tammuz, marks the 16th anniversary of passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. For many it’s a day of reflection and a day in which remember the Rebbe and, moreover, the tremendous dedication the Rebbe had to Klal Yisroel.

In honor of this special day CrownHeights.info and the Avner Institute would like to present selective photos that are being released for the very first time, from famed photographer Mr. Gadi Hoz of Toronto Canada.

How did Mr. Hoz capture these stunning photos? What was his background? Below we have included a brief bio, including details of how he found his way to the Rebbe and to 770. To learn more about Mr. Hoz’s work or to order prints Click Here.

Op-Ed: Nosson, My Little Brother

by Yosef Katzman

Sitting Shiva at the Deitsch’s.

I’m hurt, I’m shocked; I’m devastated, I have a new hole in my heart

As I’m struggling with my anger and sadness of Nossons tragic passing, I reflect on life’s journey alongside the Deitsches.

It starts with my very youth, in 1963. We moved onto Crown Street, right across the street of the Deitsches. With Reb Sholom and his wife Mirel, and their wonderful six children.

I remember being somewhat envious of the Deitsches. Reb Sholom was a man in his forties, and he had both his parents. Something that we, the first post holocaust generation, were mostly not privileged to have. My father A”h lost both his parents to famine in Samarkand in the early forties, and by the time he was Bar-Mitzvah, he was fully orphaned. I had no paternal grandparents.

On March 1, 1994, a gunman in a car opened fire on a van carrying more than a dozen Hasidic students as it began to cross the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan, critically wounding two young men and injuring two others.

The lone gunman, driving a blue Chevrolet Caprice equipped with a submachine gun, two 9mm guns, and a “street sweeper” shotgun, pursued the van full of terrified students across the bridge.

He fired in three separate bursts, spraying both sides of the van. He then disappeared into traffic as the van came to a stop at the Brooklyn end of the bridge.

The injured Yeshiva students were among dozens who were returning from a Manhattan hospital where the spiritual leader of the Lubavitch movement, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, had undergone minor surgery.

Seeing POD People? It’s No Sci-Fi Film

The New York Times

Taking care at Quality Health Center in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Joel Friedman receives a measles-mumps-rubella, or M.M.R., shot from Dov Landra, a physician assistant.

PODs are the sleeper cells of public health, assuming a different shape and observing different local mores each time a crisis emerges. When hepatitis A was diagnosed in a bartender at the Manhattan nightclub Socialista two years ago, POD people were on hand to vaccinate patrons, including some guests at Ashton Kutcher’s birthday party. In the case of a bioterrorism attack, they might turn up in your neighborhood dispensing anthrax antidote. On Feb. 18, they were in Anshe Sfard Hall in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, rolling up the sleeves of Hasidic Jews. That’s a long way from Ashton Kutcher.
