Young Shluchim packing Shalach Manos for distribution to Yidden around Ukraine.

ZHITOMIR, Ukraine [CHI] — It’s became already a usual thing that Jews in the little communities in the western Ukraine receive packages before holidays. So it was also before Purim the year.

449 kids and teenagers in more than 70 towns and villages received delivery with many types of sweets and a Megilas Ester in Russian. Also for 2513 adult Jews from about 150 settlements the mail service brought deliveries of “Mishloach Manot” to their homes.

Veiled bride Chanie Matusof and groom Nissi Gansbourg celebrate their traditional Chasidic wedding Tuesday under the Chupah, or wedding canopy, at the Marriott Madison West in Middleton. Holding the microphone is the bride's brother, Rabbi Mendel Matusof.

MADISON, WI — Both bride and groom wore flowing white. Receptions were held before and after the marriage ceremony — actually an intricate series of ceremonies — which was held outside despite a chilly wind Tuesday evening, to be under open sky.

Rabbi Shimon and Devorah Heidingsfeld, with their son, Yossi, say the Chabad will be open to all Jews.

MOORPARK, CA — Because of the lack of places for Moorpark's Jewish community to meet on a regular basis, a Los Angeles rabbi and his wife have decided to start a Chabad in the city.

Rabbi Shimon and Devorah Heidingsfeld held the first gathering of the Chabad last week, and about 50 residents gathered for a Purim celebration at the Arroyo Vista Community Center in Moorpark. The event featured an interactive reading of the Megillah, the biblical book of Esther, as well as a costume party and food.

Op-Ed: Police, Schoolyard Bullies?

by Eli Kohen

Police Officer Pablo Rivera

While it would be reckless to make a carpet statement against the entire police force, or just the 71st Precinct, it does not change the feeling I felt when I watched police officers belittle our volunteer patrolmen, Shomrim, by pressuring the victim into saying he wasn’t one hundred percent sure it was those that were in custody that assaulted him, then letting them go.

Now as if that alone wasn’t enraging enough, when we – the gathered crowd – protested this, quite vocally, Sergeant Lenny Signal along with Police Officer Pablo Rivera went ahead and arrested a Shomrim member, one who was vocal about the injustice.
