Mel Landow, a self-made South Florida millionaire and benefactor of Jewish education in the region, died Feb. 4 after suffering a heart attack while playing a game of tennis. He was 81.

Gov Spitzer Announces Additional Heating Assistance To Combat Rising Energy Prices

Second Grant Available to Those in Crisis

Governor Eliot Spitzer today announced that additional emergency home heating assistance is being made available to New York’s most vulnerable residents, in response to rising energy costs. The state has approved offering a second emergency benefit to qualified applicants through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). HEAP, a federally-funded program administered by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), assists eligible households in meeting their home energy needs. So far this winter heating season, HEAP has issued benefits to more than 719,000 families, totaling more than $178 million.

OTDA Commissioner David A. Hansell appeared today at Senior Services of Albany on Delaware Avenue to help publicize the additional benefits.

Rabbi Zelig Sharfstein, 79, one of the oldest Rabbis of Chabad in North America, was sent to Cincinnati over 50 years ago where he served as Rabbi of the City and was a member of the Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch Hakloli.

The Levaya will be Tuesday, 9:00 AM at Shomrei Hadas and passing by 770 at 9:30 AM

DIMONA, Israel — One week after a suicide bombing in the central Negev desert town of Dimona, Israel, claimed the life a Russian immigrant and seriously injured her husband, Chabad-Lubavitch of Dimona and the municipality held a ceremony near the site of the tragedy.
