FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ — A New Jersey rabbi has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the township where he lives, saying local officials are conducting an illegal surveillance of his house and restricting his right to pray at his home.

The federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Trenton on behalf of Avraham Bernstein, who is represented by the Rutherford Institute, a Charlottesville, Va.-based civil liberties group that focuses on First Amendment and religious freedom cases.

JERUSALEM, Israel — The Jerusalem municipality this week named a street after Rabbi Eliezer Nanas, who endured imprisonment at the hands of Soviet authorities and, later in life, tutored thousands of students in Israel’s capital. In a ceremony attended by Rabbi Zeev Slonim, rabbi of central Jerusalem, the municipality unveiled Maaleh Harav Nanas, which translates to “Rabbi Nanas Ascent.”

The Avtzon’s were brought out by Rabbi Danny Yiftach-BaHashem and will be working in the field of adult education. They have already kicked off with many great programs, including the JLI Lecture Series and preparations for the High Holidays.

This event marked the city’s 855th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of its historic Synagogue. For one day, the hall was transformed into a museum and numerous guests visited exhibits on Jewish life, clothing, holidays, Shabbat, and books on local Jewish history.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — At 4:00 this afternoon a terrible tragedy befell our community when HaBochur HaTomim Yisroel Noach ben Chaim Ezra Yibadel L’Chaim Tovim Tzfasman was struck and killed by a train this afternoon. Frightened subway riders called 911 and Hatzalah after witnessing the terrible incident.

Trains were backed up in both directions as a result and many commuters were forced to wait until Chesed Shel Emes completed their work and the MTA restored the train service.
