What would have been a nice picture…

Can you imagine a picture of 40 Sukkah Mobiles, ranging in sizes from the standard pickup trucks and getting larger and larger to as big as the 18 wheeler flatbeds you’ve seen right here on CrownHeights.info, lined up together, perhaps on eastern Parkway, in front of 770 or at least on Kingston Avenue?

That would have been an awesome picture!

When asked what they thought about the idea at the office of Mitzvah Tank Org. the ones responsible for the Sukkah Mobiles, the response was “do you really think it is possible to get more than 15 Shluchim, approx. 25 groups of bochurim and several restaurants to all stop what they’re doing for a picture?”

My Favorite Museum

by Sara Miriam Gross – Jounior Mishpacha Magazine

Hello, my name is Batya and I live in Brooklyn. One day last year, on Chol HaMoed Succos, my bubby took me on the subway to a tall, shiny museum building. It looked very new. It wasn’t a quiet, serious museum about science, or one that has lots of paintings. It was a museum all about me — and you — and it was fun!

Campus Sukkah Vandalized, Chabad House Calls for Jewish Pride

Police at the University of California at Davis are investigating the vandalism of a sukkah constructed by the off-campus Chabad House.

According to a report over the weekend in the school’s California Aggie newspaper, representatives of the university’s Student Programs and Activities Center reported discovering anti-Israel statements spray-painted on the interior of the sukkah. Photographs taken at the time show two messages: “End Israeli Occupation” took up a good portion of a blank wall; “Free Palestine!” appeared on a sign belonging to Chabad-Lubavitch of Davis and wishing passersby a “Happy Sukkot.”

New York honored as one of nation’s most bike-friendly cities

It may surprise some cyclists, but New York City has been honored as one of the nation’s most bike-friendly cities.

New York rode away with a bronze medal from the League of American Bicyclists, which recently put the city on par with the college town of Davis, Calif.

The nod comes as Mayor Bloomberg works to promote cycling – installing 400 to 500 bike racks a year, and setting aside 400 miles of bike lanes and paths by 2009.

It’s a Boy! It’s a Boy!

The Proud Zeidy, Rabbi Yoseph Kahanov, Director, Chabad of NE Florida with the two new Shluchim!

The dual expression of “Mazal Tov! Mazal Tov!” took on new meaning this past holiday, to the Kahanov family, as two new members danced into their lives during all the joy and festivity.

Rabbi Mendy and Nechamie Browd (nee Kahanov) , Shluchim in Jacksonville, Fl, gave birth on Shmini Atzeres at around 12:00 pm to a happy baby boy.

To the surprise and delight of the hospital staff, Fraidy Vogel (nee Kahanov) and her husband Levi, new Shluchim to St. Augustine, Fl, arrived the very next day at the same hospital, same floor, three rooms down, with same the Bubby following in step.

Mrs. Kahanov, who was in the hospital with her daughter (Browd) while she was giving birth, had walked the 8 miles back home in order to celebrate Simchas Torah with the rest of the family and community.

It was a wet but very happy father and Bubby that entered the room, right in the middle of Hakofos, bringing a new wave of energy and excitement to the already joyous festivities. The crowd erupted in cheers and, with wishes of Mazel Tov, continued dancing to the tune of Siman Tov and Mazel Tov.

Hours later, Bubby was back in the same hospital, this time with her second daughter (Vogel) . This truly made her the Bubby of the day!

Between the black hats, the laws of Yom Tov, and the growing number of candles that were displayed in the waiting room, the maternity ward was all a part of the family Simcha.

The hospital staff could not do enough to accommodate their new patients with their special needs. Calling home to leave messages for the eager fathers and family at home, flipping on and off light switches and opening countless boxes of tissues, etc.

Not only did the same doctor deliver both babies- but the nurse who had participated in the first birth, insisted on staying hours past her shift to assist in this extraordinary event. Having just familiarized herself with the specific customs and provisions involving an orthodox woman giving birth on a Jewish Holiday, Nurse Danielle felt indispensable.

The Vogel baby was born early Friday night, only hours after his newborn cousin. Upon attending the Shalom Zachor, smiling guests back at home found themselves repeating the words, “Mazel Tov! Mazel Tov!” as they learned of the second Simcha.

The Bris (ritual circumcision) for Baby Browd will take place IY”H this coming Thursday, the 29 of Tishrei. The Vogel Bris will IY”H be held on Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan.

The Chabad community of Jacksonville looks forward with anticipation to hosting the Browd and Vogel out-of-town guests this coming Shabbos and to the extended festivities that have, for most, just come to an end.

Chabad of Georgia grows to 10 centers with no end in sight

Hirshy Minkowicz of Chabad of Alpharetta
leads one of many Chabad celebrations.

Throughout their yeshiva years, Chabad rabbis are trained to be men on the street in cities across the country and around the world that could use an extra Jewish touch. They are sent to cities and rural towns to offer the essence of Chabad – the Hebrew acronym for chachmah (wisdom); binah (comprehension); and da’at (knowledge) – to Jews or anyone embracing the Jewish soul.

It may seem a lot like a Christian missionary model, like the young Mormons riding their bikes and wearing ties while searching for converts, but the Chabad approach has worked well for members of the Lubavitch branch of Chasidism since its arrival in America nearly 66 years ago.

CON ED ‘PAPER’ RIPPED

NY Post
VOLT JOLT: Unpopular
paper-wrapped cables
to stay till 2024.

NEW YORK, NY — Con Ed charges the highest rates of any major U.S. electric utility, yet rotting paper wrapped around aging high-voltage wires is all that separates the city from its next blackout.

For years, the state Public Service Commission has been after Con Ed to replace its 10,000-volt paper-insulated cables, some of which failed during the 1999 Washington Heights blackout and last year’s nine-day Astoria and Long Island City outage.

Con Ed concedes that the underground cables have a higher failure rate than newer ones, but it has no plan to replace them all before 2024.
