Witness to the Transformative Power of a Teenager’s Friendship

by Moshe Bryski
Chana Stery Bryski, left, with her friend
Miranda

Our daughter, Chana Stery, is studying in a seminary in Israel this year.

As with most parents who send their children off to college out of town, we savor and enjoy every phone call, note, e-mail and text message we receive from our daughter. An added beauty to these communications is our knowing that we’re not only the ones back home who get to hear from her on a regular basis. She continues to correspond with her very best friend: a lovely little girl named Miranda.

Miranda is a child with special needs. During Chana Stery’s four years of volunteering for our community’s Friendship Circle, she and a friend, Mushka Sapo, would visit Miranda at her home at least once a week.

The Weekly Sedra – Tetzaveh – Inside Out or Outside In?

Rabbi Yoseph Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL

Chatzkel the tailor wanders into a small flophouse late one cold and stormy night. “Quite full,” says the innkeeper. “Let’s see . . . we’ve got a Cossack in one of the rooms up on the top floor. You can climb into the bed beside him.”

Thankfully accepting the offer, the wanderer climbs the stairs to the upper floor, but not before asking the innkeeper to wake him well before dawn. “Got a train to catch,” he says importantly.
Before he knows it, there’s a hand shaking him awake. “It’s well before dawn,” says a voice; “your train.”

He dresses hurriedly in the dark and rushes to the train station. On the way he passes a large mirror in an ornate frame. A Cossack in uniform looks back at him. “That idiot innkeeper!” he exclaims in dismay. “He woke up the Cossack instead of Chatzkel the tailor. I’ll never make it back in time to wake myself up and catch my train!”

Adar Joy Helps Long Island – Turn Kirby’s into Pickles

MINEOLA, NY [CHI] — One of the most popular, informative and delicious workshops in Chabad history came to Chabad of Mineola Long Island.  The class was called “The Art of Kosher Pickle Making,” and it’s taking America by storm.

The workshop, led by Rabbi Mendel Margolin, AKA Rabbi Pickle, taught the history of the American kosher dill, how to make one’s own pickles, as well as what makes a “kosher” pickle. In fact, America was named after a pickle peddler — Amerigo Vespucci.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Tetzaveh

The Rebbe says:

1. The first verse of this week’s Torah portion says, “And you will command the children of Israel that they shall take for you clear olive oil, crushed, for illumination, to light a lamp continually”. Our Sages explain that there are actually three grades of olive oil and only the first grade, the pure olive oil, can be used for the Menorah.

2. In classic form, the Rebbe now points out that this law regarding the Menorah must also have pertinent repercussions for our daily lives and service to Hashem:
