The city's weeklong festival ñ perhaps a bit less famous than the one farther down the coast in Rio de Janeiro, but nevertheless recognized as the world's largest ñ annually attracts more than 2 million tourists; this year, thousands of Jews from Israel and other locations have joined the festivities, according to Chabad-Lubavitch of Salvador.

In Russia, Jewish Inmate Marks Brit Mila
ORENBURG, Russia — For the first time in the history of the Russian Federation’s penitentiary system, a Brit Mila ceremony took place in the Orenburg Regional Prison. This age-old Jewish tradition involved a Jewish inmate who is currently serving out a ten-year term. While this ancient tradition is becoming more commonplace among Jews across the Former Soviet Union, it is quite unique that this ritual is undergone by those serving out prison sentences.
The levaya will be Thursday, in Israel, at Bet Almin Hayarkon at Shaar Hageulah at 6:45 pm.
They will be sitting Shiva in Yerushalayim at Rechov Elkana 15, Mishpachat Yaffa, near Shikun Chabad.

Parents, Students, and Teachers gather at the Shluchim Online School’s annual Celebration
BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — Hand in hand with the concurrent Kinus Tzeirei Hashluchos, dozens of young Shluchos who attend The Shluchim Office’s Online School converged on Chovevei Torah’s social hall on Thursday January 24th, 2008 for a grand luncheon and class reunion, with many meeting their virtual classmates and teachers for the first time in real life.
