Chabad Emissaries Celebrate The Lubavitcher Rebbe!

36 years ago, at a special Farbrengen gathering to celebrate his 70th birthday, The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, asked his followers to establish 71 new Chabad educational and outreach institutions. At the Farbrengen, West Coast Chabad-Lubavitch immediately made a commitment to The Rebbe to open at least 10 percent of the new centers.

The very next day, the first of these new institutions — the Chabad House in Berkley, CA — was launched in The Rebbe’s office at 770 Eastern Parkway in a private audience with his emissaries on the West Coast, Rabbi Shmuel Dovid haLevi Raichik OBM, and Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Eliyohu Cunin, Director of West Coast Chabad-Lubavitch.

To some the Rebbe corresponded in writing, others came to the Rebbe for a private audience; still others received the Rebbe’s blessing and advice at a brief encounter on Sundays when the Rebbe distributed dollars to be given to charity. In honor of Yud Aleph Nissan, the Rebbe’s Birthday, I am happy to present a few glimpses into these interactions.
