Crown Heights has changed from an affluent Brooklyn community to a breeding ground of violent crime. People have been robbed, beaten, stabbed and even murdered.

BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — The new daily shiur on Gemara Sotah is generating unprecedendant interest among Anash around the world. The program’s new website TorahCafe.com will feature ongoing live and archived Shiurim in all areas of Torah accompanied by the associated text, as well as other visual aids, on the screen.
Men, women and children are invited to the outdoor event of the year in honor of Lag Ba’Omer. There will be Live Music, A Huge Bon Fire, Dancing and a special program for children (8:00 to 8:45pm). There will be separate men and women sections.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited The Schluchim Center Monday night to talk with local Jewish leaders about the recent rise in racial attacks.
People who met with Commissioner Kelly say the message they wanted to get across is that the incidents aren’t a Jewish issue or a black issue, but a problem facing the entire community.
The students at the Chabad-Lubavitch yeshiva in Warsaw, Poland, got a visit from an unexpected guest, Professor Israel (Robert) J. Aumann, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — The touchy, sometimes volatile relationships between black and Jewish residents of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights have frayed, with members of each community blaming the other for violent attacks aimed at youngsters.
In January, a Jewish teenager needed stitches after being jumped by black youths shouting epithets. In April, a black college student got pepper-sprayed and clubbed by a man police say may be a member of a Jewish community patrol. And Friday, another Jewish teen was beaten and robbed by black perpetrators.
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — After the surprise visit by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, there was a noticeable increase in police patrols and vehicles, some say it was due to Kelly’s unhappiness with the fact that there was no police posted in front of 770 and that the patrols weren’t very visible.
Two of the NYPD’s ‘skywatch’ towers were deployed in Crown Heights, one on Eastern Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue while the other on Schenectady Avenue and Carroll Street, along with three NYPD Mobile Command Posts.

Chabad of Hawaii is sending the first rabbi in over a decade to the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein Atoll.
The nonprofit, orthodox Jewish organization, in conjunction with the U.S. military, is sending a junior rabbi to the two-and-a-half mile long atoll to serve an estimated 18 people out of the atoll’s population of 1,400. Most of the Jewish community members are in the islands as civilian military employees.

The Chicago philanthropist bought Woodland Towers retirement village in DeLand two decades ago partly to help a friend out of a business bind.

TARZANA, CA [CHI] — Once again, with the help of many Anash and Shluchim, Chabad of the Valley has reached its goal of putting on Tefillin with well over 1500 Jews. In addition, close to 3500 Neshek packs were distributed. All in all, the giant Chabad Mivtza booth was a Kiddush Shem Lubavitch. Several people made a commitment to put on Tefillin on a daily basis.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — Last night Rabbi Yosi Jacobson was in middle of his weekly shiur with the members of his congregation Beis Shmuel. The shiur was held at the Shluchim Office on Eastern Parkway when suddenly an unexpected guest walked in: N.Y. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Kelly was in the neighborhood after the spate of attacks against Jews in recent weeks culminating in the vicious beating of a Jewish teenager on Albany Ave last Thursday night.

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia [CHI] — Chief Rabbi of Primorsky Krai, Yisroel Silberstein, held a meeting with the region’s governor, Sergei Darkin. They discussed various historical and practical issues for the Jewish community in this Far East region. The main concern was the restoration of the Synagogue, a historical and cultural monument dating back to the early 1900s, which was transferred to the community’s ownership in 2004.
