Rally for Immigration Reform in Postville

POSTVILLE, IA [KWWL] — An immigration rally has kicked off in Postville with protesters shouting “Si se puede,” translated in English as “yes, we can.”

Hundreds of people marched through the small Iowa town of about 2,200 on Sunday. Busloads of people from Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul and other nearby cities came to protest a federal immigration raid of the Agriprocessors plant in May.

Police Cruiser Crashes into Van, Police Refuse Hatzalah Aid

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A police cruiser slammed into a 15 passenger van at around 9:30 Sunday night. The incident took place in the intersection of Albany Avenue and Carroll Street where a 15 passenger van, driven by a yungerman, heading down Carroll was broadsided by a police cruiser coming down Albany.

Multiple eye witnesses stated that they observed the police car driving with only its lights flashing and no sirens, and when approaching the intersection the police car did not slow down. From police officers on scene the police car did not appear to be responding to an emergency.

An Israeli newspaper’s disclosure of the note Sen. Barack Obama left at Jerusalem’s Western Wall this week is the equivalent of reading someone’s diary — a gross violation of privacy — several Long Island rabbis said Friday.

Original Protest to the Cost of Seminary Tuition

The tuition for girls who want to attend seminary in Israel is an extremely taxing expense for parents. The average cost of a year in seminary is around $15,000.

One parent, a Shliach in the United States, choose an original way to make that protest, wearing a baseball cap with the following: “I can’t afford a Borsalino because I sent my daughter to seminary”.

Six Cars Vandalized Friday Night

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] -– Shabbos morning the residents of Brooklyn Avenue between East New York and Maple awoke to find their cars vandalized the paint and glass scratched with some kind of tool.

Six cars in total were vandalized, all of them belonging to Jewish residents, and all of them were high end cars including BMW’s and Cadillac’s.

Drunk Jewish Teen Crashes into Bungalow Colony on Shabbos

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — Police got a call Saturday afternoon about 3:00pm of a vehicle that rolled over a few times on Route 42 and crashed into a bungalow at Friendship Bungalow Colony on LaVista Drive.

The car that missed a turn-off was driven by a drunk 16-year-old boy, who extracted himself out of the vehicle, and start running away, while Yiddish music was still blasting out of the vehicle. Hatzolah responded and was immediately on the scene.

Police gave chase, caught up with the teenager and arrested him.

Zoning Board Finds Rabbi in Violation

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ — Seven members of the township Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously decided Thursday that a local rabbi is, in fact, running a house of worship out of his home.

“If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it probably is a duck,” zoning board member William Nero said before the board voted. “And without question, this is a duck.”

Synagogue gets green light for expansion on Dempster

SKOKIE, IL — The Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie was given the green light Monday for an expansion of its current facility at 4059 Dempster St.

Under a special use permit approved by Village Trustees, the synagogue will be able to expand to the east and occupy a storefront at 4059 Dempster St.
