Sun May Set for the New York Sun

Dear Readers of the Sun:

This morning I write to you about the future of The New York Sun, which is in circumstances that may require us to cease publication at the end of September unless we succeed in our efforts to find additional financial backing. The managing editor, Ira Stoll, who is one of the founding partners in the paper, and I have shared this news with our colleagues, and we would like our readers as well to be aware of the situation.

Five Mezuzahs Torn from Apt. Doorposts

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — 5 Mezuzahs were torn from apartment doors inside of 1690 Union Street, a relatively small building with 31 residential units, most of whom aren’t Jewish, located between Schenectady and Utica Avenues.

The vandalism was discovered at around 6:30pm on Wednesday. Police along with Shomrim were called and immediately responded to the scene. Police quickly deemed the incident a bias crime and brought down a Crime Scene Unit to dust for fingerprints. Additionally detectives from the Bias Crime Squad responded and began investigating the incident.

New DVD coming from JEM

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — CrownHeights.info has learned that JEM is now in the finishing stages of preparing a new version of Davening with The Rebbe, one of JEM’s all time best sellers. With its release JEM will have accomplished another first. The new release on DVD, entitled Climbing the Rungs of Prayer, will feature both adult and children’s narrations in four languages: English, Hebrew, Russian and French.

13th Annual N’shei uBnos Chabad Convention

JAMBEROO, NSW, Australia [CHI] — Two hundred women from all over Australia gathered in Jamberoo this weekend for Chabad of Australia’s N’shei uBnos Chabad convention. The annual convention, which alternates between Melbourne and Sydney is the inspiration of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. It takes place in many countries throughout the world. This 13th Australian Convention was convened by Gavriella Aber, Hudi Braun, Elka Feldman and Tamar Rosenthal under the guidance of Rebbetzin Pnina Feldman, head of N’shei Chabad in Sydney and major sponsor of the weekend.

1st Annual Released Time Conference: A Success

NAPONACH, NY [CHI] — Statistic after staggering statistic. 2,444,000 1,428,000… 712,000 out of 1,084,000 Jewish Children in the USA do not receive a Jewish education. “We are going to change it all, this is our goal. We are waging an uphill battle, and we will succeed” is the way Rabbi Sadya Engel of the NCFJE opened his speech at the first Annual NCFJE Released Time Conference earlier this week.

Forced to Run Once More, Jewish Residents Return to Storm-Tossed New Orleans

Fences collapsed in residential communities throughout the New Orleans area after Hurricane Gustav came ashore, but the damage was a far cry from the destruction suffered three years ago in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. (Photo: Colby Jordan)

Though anticipating damage similar to three years ago, residents of greater New Orleans were largely spared devastation from Hurricane Gustav, which came ashore west of the city on Monday. Joining highly organized columns of evacuees, Jewish residents across the Gulf Coast headed to points inland. The five families of Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries serving New Orleans relocated to the Birmingham headquarters of Chabad-Lubavitch of Alabama.

150 Children Attend Inaugural Summer

FAIR LAWN, NJ [CHI] — The idea of creating a Jewish day camp came slowly to the rabbis at Bris Avrohom of Fair Lawn, but they knew they wanted to fill a void. Many local children were not getting a Jewish education throughout the school year and their goal became to provide these children with a fun summer experience that also gave them a background in Jewish traditions and customs. The Fair Lawn Jewish Day Camp was born! The initial registration was overwhelming, as the only Jewish day camp in Fair Lawn, NJ attracted children from all walks of life within the community.

Fallsburg Man Charged with Arson, Hate Crimes

FALLSBURG, NY — A Fallsburg man was charged with felony arson and hate crimes on Tuesday in connection with a bungalow fire and spray-painted slurs in his Sullivan county town.

Town of Fallsburg Police said Edward Smith, 44, allegedly started a fire at Skopps Bungalows on Seldon Road and also spray painted slurs and threats.

New Ukraine Synagogue a Replica of New York Jewish Landmark

Its design based on Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., the new Jewish community center in Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine, is built on the site of a synagogue once shuttered by Communist authorities.

For Jewish residents of Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine, a long-awaited event is soon to occur: the opening of the city’s very own community center.
