TOWSON, MD — Last July, Rabbi Mendy and Sheiny Rivkin took posts as the new Chabad shluchim, or emissaries, at Towson University. Their goal, they say, is to give students “whatever Judaism we can.”

The couple say they always knew they would become shluchim. But Rabbi Rivkin, who was raised in New York, said it was important for him to do it in a place “where it counts,” where he had to start from scratch, building a framework for constituents. He said this is the case with Towson, which only in recent years has experienced an increase in Jewish non-commuter students.

By Chana Kroll

Students at Tora Kolleg, the first Chabad-Lubavitch yeshiva in Western Europe for young adults from non-traditional homes, can finish their degrees while immersing themselves in Jewish studies.

BERLIN, Germany — As Jewish communities the world over took note of the 70th anniversary of the Nazi-coordinated pogroms known as Kristallnacht, a common thread throughout the commemorations was the special pride Holocaust survivors take in the signs of flourishing Jewish life throughout Germany.

Kosher Dinner to Spread Awareness on Campus

Jim Sojourner – Collegian

The pungent stench of putrid chicken flesh floated heavily in the stagnant air as Jewish CSU students Max Brodsky and Joaquin Matek stared downward at the yellowed, slimy chicken, with looks of frustration intermingled with twinges of nausea rippling across their faces.

Around the corner Rabbi Yerachmiel Gorelik paced wildly, his dark bushy beard moving in tandem with his rapidly moving lips, which addressed the disembodied voices that squeaked from his cell phone speaker.

“There’s always something that goes wrong,” Gorelik said, still sounding optimistic.

Unarmed, Shop Owner Turned Tables on Gunmen

Christine Hauser and C. J. Hughes – NY Times

Some would-be robbers picked the wrong shop owner to rob in Brooklyn on Monday night.

Even though he was unarmed, the shop owner, identified by neighbors as Youssouf Drame, 35, wrested a gun away from one of the men and fatally shot two of them. The police say that two other suspects — it’s unclear whether they entered the store — are at large.

Judge Considers Releasing Ex-Agriprocessors Leader

Tony Leys – Desmoines Register

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — A federal prosecutor warned Wednesday that if a judge releases Sholom Rubashkin from jail, the former Agriprocessors executive could quickly flee to Israel.

“The risk of flight here is acute, it’s too great,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Deegan said in court.

But Rubashkin’s lawyer said his client is tightly tied to his family and the community of Postville, where he ran the packing plant for years. The lawyer, Baruch Weiss, added that Israel has a strong extradition agreement with the United States. Even if he somehow could get to Israel after surrendering his U.S. passport, Weiss said, Rubashkin surely would be sent back. “With these sorts of charges, he will not find a home in Israel, and he knows that.”
