Chabads of Manhattan’s Chanukah on Ice!

NEW YORK, NY [CHI] — Close to 1000 people took to the ice on Central Park’s Trump Wollman Rink for an evening of Jewish unity on Tuesday, December 23, the third night of Chanukah. Chabad’s Chanukah on Ice NYC drew people from all five boroughs and beyond, to as far way as Hungary, South America, Israel and France.

SPRINGFIELD, MA — In a brief, wind-chilled ceremony, the spirit of Hanukkah was celebrated Monday with the annual lighting of the menorah at Court Square.

Chanukah Party at New Kingston Ave Chesed Center

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Sunday the first night of chanukah a party was held at the Chesed Center, a division of Ahavas Chesed. Lots of Doughnuts, Nosh and Gifts where given out to the kids. Gifts where donated by many people in the community, with over 100 Gifts where donated by the Laniado Family, Mill basin. The fun filled day was topped of with a delicous supper from the soup kitchen.

PORTLAND, ME — It’s not a sight you see very often: a Hasidic rabbi, held aloft by a Portland Fire Department aerial bucket, struggling against near-blizzard conditions to light an oil lamp on a giant menorah.

When, at last, the flame was lit Sunday, stalwart children sang and a round of applause erupted from the small gathering for the 22nd annual lighting of the Grand Hannukah Menorah at Portland City Hall.

ADL Appeals to Attorney General in Rubashkin Case

NEW YORK, NY [JTA] — The Anti-Defamation League has asked the U.S. attorney general to ensure that Israel’s Law of Return is not used to deny bail to Jewish defendants.

In a letter Wednesday to Michael Mukasey, an Orthodox Jew, ADL National Director Abraham Foxman took note of a federal magistrate judge’s recent denial of bail to the former manager of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant.

MTA Releases Worst-Case Plan, Says Fare Hikes A Must

NEW YORK, NY [NY1] — The MTA has said all along it needs to raise fares to close its massive budget gap and now they’re saying just how much those fares could go up.

Under the plan, riders can expect to shell out as much as $3 for a subway or bus fare, along with big increases for weekly or monthly MetroCards. There could also be major service cuts as well — a plan that’s not sitting well with many commuters.

Jews Shine a Ray of Hope in Celebration of Chanukah

SYDNEY, Australia — Hundreds of families from Sydney’s Jewish community gathered in Martin Place last night to celebrate the start of Hanukkah, the eight-day long Festival of Lights.

In windy conditions, dignitaries including local federal MP Tanya Plibersek and Lord Mayor Clover Moore turned out to celebrate the religious festival, which culminated in the lighting of a giant 10m Menorah.

Capitol Menorah Lighting Warms Sub Zero Weather

SAINT PAUL, MN [CHI] — Governor Tim Pawlenty lit the Shamosh and Senator Norm Coleman kindled the first light of the giant Capitol Menorah, Sunday evening, the first night of Chanuka in the presence of scores of Minnesotans who braved the frigid sub zero weather to attend the Menorah Lighting ceremony on the grounds of the State Capitol.
