Capitol Menorah Lighting Warms Sub Zero Weather

SAINT PAUL, MN [CHI] — Governor Tim Pawlenty lit the Shamosh and Senator Norm Coleman kindled the first light of the giant Capitol Menorah, Sunday evening, the first night of Chanuka in the presence of scores of Minnesotans who braved the frigid sub zero weather to attend the Menorah Lighting ceremony on the grounds of the State Capitol.

Following the Menorah Lighting the Senator and the Governor joined the assembled including Lubavitch rabbis and Yeshiva students in a lively Chassidic dance. Afterward the crowd moved into a large heated tent where Chanuka latkes and doughnuts were served and the children receives chocolate Chanuka gelt. The Menorah Lighting, sponsored by Upper Midwest Merkos – Chabad Lubavitch was dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg who were killed by terrorists in the recent attack in Mumbai, India.

Before the lighting a group of Rabbis and lay leaders met with the Governor in the State Capitol. Rabbis Moshe and Mendel Feller spoke with the governor about various issues. Rabbis Feller showed the Governor the picture of the Kinnus Hashluchim and discussed the activities of Lubavitch worldwide. The Governor was presented with some books and publications and then proceeded to the program.

Rabbi Mendel Feller briefly spoke about Chanuka and shared a lesson from the Rebbe. Governor Pawlenty spoke about the victory of good over evil Senator Coleman spoke about the lesson of peace. Rabbi Moshe Feller, dedicating the event to the memory the Holtzbergs said the evening Shema with all present. Thanks to Rabbi Gershon Grossbaum for the quick light Menorah and Rabbi Meir Rubinfeld for hot refreshments in a warm tent!
