NEW YORK [AP] — New York City’s medical examiner warns that proposed budget cuts could threaten Jewish and Muslim burial rites.
Dr. Charles Hirsch says the cuts could hamper his office in its efforts to expedite the burials of observant Jews and Muslims, whose religions call for burials within 24 hours of death.
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Black woman was struck and injuredby a turning car on the corner of Crown Street and Kingston Avenue. The driver, a young Bochur, stopped his and immediately called 911, while other Bochurim who witnessed the accident called Shomrim and Hatzalah.

Rabbi Tzvi and his wife Shana (nee Biston) Dechter along with their newborn daughter Chaya Mushka of Crown Heights, will IYH be moving out on Shlichus to Lighthouse Point, FL where they will establish a new Chabad House serving the local Jewish residents in East Deerfield Beach, East Pompano Beach, and Hillsboro Beach.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A father and his teenage son were shot dead in a Brooklyn bodega Wednesday night after they resisted a pair of armed robbers.
The shooting happened at around 9:45 p.m. in the borough’s Crown Heights section.

NIKOLAYEV, Ukraine [FJC] — The Jewish community of Nikolayev has good cause for celebration, with the announcement that the State Archives of the Nikolayev Region – one of six archival institutions of Ukraine where Torah scrolls were stored – will be returning the 24th of the 25 such scrolls to the Jewish community. The transfer will take place on March 25 and the scroll will be officially transferred to the Jewish community of Nikolayev. It will be received directly by Chief Rabbi of Nikolayev Sholom Gottlieb.
From the Safer Haminhagim: [Every day from Rosh Chodesh Nissan until the twelfth of the month, usually after Shacharis,] one reads the passage [from Bamidbar 7-8:4] that describes the offering brought on that day by a particular Nasi, or tribal prince, for the dedication of the altar of the Mishkan. [In common parlance, each day’s passage itself is often referred to as “the Nasi.”] This daily reading is followed by the prayer which opens with the words yehi ratzon (and which appears in Siddur Torah Or [as well as in Siddur Tehillat HaShem, p. 371]). CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — As part of a series of meetings regarding the aftermath of November 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, Indian Ambassador to the United Nations Nirupam Sen visited Rabbi Nachman and Freida Holtzberg at their Brooklyn home on Wednesday. The ambassador extended his country’s condolences to the Holtzbergs, whose son and daughter-in-law, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, perished along with four others at the Chabad-Lubavitch center they operated in the city.

ASPEN, CO — A group from the Tzerei Chabad of Israel has arranged a skiing trip for wounded veterans of the IDF in Aspen, Colorado. The group is presently flying from Israel to Aspen as guests of the local Chabad House, which is run by Rabbi Mendel Mintz.
ALBANY, NY [AP] — Gov. David Paterson on Tuesday ordered layoffs that could total more than 4 percent of state workers after unions refused concessions amid a staggering economic downturn that was projected to push the state’s deficit to $16 billion in the next year.
Budget Director Laura Anglin told The Associated Press that the layoffs of nearly 9,000 employees would be the first since the late 1990s after unions refused to even provide counterproposals.

The event will be held tomorrow, Thursday March 26, at the T-Building Auditorium of Kings County Hospital, 451 Clarkson Avenue, 2nd floor (at New York Ave). The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a reception at which kosher food will be served. The awards presentation will be held at 8:00 p.m.
