His curiosity had peaked when he was informed that it was the Ninth of Av and that he was listening to the Jewish people wail over the destruction of their Holy Temple in Jerusalem. “When did this thing happen?” probed the inquisitive Emperor. “Some 1700 years ago,” came the nonchalant reply. The selected Farbrengens from the three months of Menachem Av, Elul and Tishrei of the years 5711-5728 (1951-1968) have been extracted from the original recordings made by Rabbi Sholom Yisroel Hodakov during the events, and have been meticulously preserved by experts in reel-to-reel audio work.

Commemoration for Golani Brigade in India
MANALI, India [CHI] — Yesterday marks three years since Commander Roei Klein with the cry of “Shemah Yisroel” saved his fellow soldiers by leaping on a live grenade, his body taking most of the blast. Seven other courageous soldiers from Golani Brigade 51 died on that tragic day defending the people and land of Israel.

Kahanov, 22, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Zimmerman, 23, of Chicago, are members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one branch of Orthodox Judaism, which has its headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Both are rabbis who study at Central Chabad Yeshivah in Brooklyn, N.Y.
“Chabad” is a Hebrew acronym for the expression “wisdom, intelligence and knowledge” - words that describe the theology of the movement. Lubavitch is a town in White Russia, now Belarus, where the movement was based for more than a century.

For the past three weeks, Leibel Kahanov and Ephraim Zimmerman have traveled throughout Montana, encouraging other Jews in their faith.

Founded in Michigan more than 15 years ago, the Friendship Circle has garnered international attention for its home visit programs, workshops, and other initiatives that help individuals with special needs maximize their potential. Providing an outlet for Jewish learning and expression is a strong part of the Friendship Circle, explained Rabbi Zalman Grossbaum, director of the Friendship Circle of MetroWest, N.J., so it was only natural that as the Birthright family of tours continued to grow, staff would look for ways to include the special-needs population.
“The mission of the Friendship Circle has always been to enable those with special needs to fully participate in the Jewish community and enjoy the same experiences that are available to the mainstream population,” said Grossbaum. “Why should the Israel experience be any different?”

Almost three dozen U.S. young adults with special needs wrapped up a unique tour of the Holy Land, the second time in as many years the Friendship Circle – a Chabad-Lubavitch network of programs that pairs teenage volunteers with children with special needs – has worked to make the free tours provided by Taglit-Birthright Israel available to its constituents.
