JLI Retreat Explores Themes of Jewish Empowerment

The Rebbe intended for all of us to be leaders, not followers,” Mr. George Rohr charged a packed hall at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Connecticut. “We may not understand the power we have to impact the world, but it is up to all of us to make this world heavenly. We can’t leave it to the teachers and rabbis.”

The call to action summed up the general sentiment at the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute’s fourth annual retreat, which ended Sunday. Though attendees undoubtedly came to soak up as much wisdom as possible, their purpose was greater than hitting the books.

Today, we are proud to announce the official vote of the Board of trustees and the membership to ultimately change their center to a Chabad house - for good, by accepting the official name Anshe Sholom Chabad Jewish Community Center.

ISREAL — It was disclosed Monday that the body found in a relatively advanced state of decay on Friday in an abandoned structure near Beit Dagan in central Israel was that of Rafael (Refoel) Miriashvilli, a 25-year-old Chabad Lubavitch yeshiva student from the city of Lod who had been missing for five weeks. Police say evidence at the scene points to Miriashvilli having been murdered although the circumstances are not clear.

There have been rumors in Chabad circles that he was murdered by Arabs in revenge for his anti-intermarriage efforts. Approximately four years ago, working for the Yad L’Achim anti-assimilation and anti-intermarriage organization, Miriashvilli and two colleagues were charged with kidnapping and impersonating security personnel in the course of saving a Jewish woman from marriage to an Arab.

Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters officially appointed new Chabad representatives to St. Martin/St. Maarten in the Caribbean Islands.

With the arrival Monday, August 17, of Rabbi Moshe and Sara Chanowitz, and their baby boy, this tiny island becomes the fourth location in the region, following Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic, to benefit from the placement of permanent Chabad representatives.

The incident happened at around 9:30pm on President Street between Kingston and Albany Avenues, where the 28-year-old was grabbed by one of the group and put into a headlock or chokehold and the other three began punching him, he was then thrown to the ground and the four began kicking him. A Jewish woman who witnessed the attack began screaming and chased the group off.
