Charles P. Sifton, a federal judge in Brooklyn whose rulings paved the way for women to join the New York Fire Department and for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to run for a third term, died Monday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 74.
The cause was complications of sarcoidosis, a lung disease, his son Sam said.
Judge Sifton handled many major cases in more than 30 years on the bench, many of them as chief judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
One of those cases was the issue of the ownership of the library of Aguch. On January 6 1987 Judge Sifton declared victory in favor of the Chassidim and thus became Didan Notzach.
He has won multiple awards for a portfolio that includes politicians, royalty, fashion models and film stars. He has photographed the likes as Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Ben Stiller, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and is regarded by some as one of the world’s most exciting fashion and portrait photographers.
But it is the world of Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis and their families that forms the unlikely subject for Frederic Aranda’s first solo exhibition, “Kosherface,” which begins this week in London.
