Jewish “Heroes” Praise Communities’ Dedication to Those in Need

By Chana Kroll for Chabad.org
Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff, a semi-finalist in the contest, assists Consul General of Israel to the Southwest Asher Yarden in blessing the Lulav & Esrog.

When the umbrella organization of North American Jewish communities launched its new campaign to shine a spotlight on local leaders and activists, few people thought the Internet-based Jewish Community Heroes contest would have quite the impact or buzz it’s garnered for several months, least of all the 20 top vote-getters announced this month.

Call for Pidyon Shevuyim as Criminal Case against Shomrim Goes to Trial

One calamity after another has befallen the Chabad community at large. Young lives have been taken from us, Jews are facing prosecution, and others already sit in prison.

Most Crown Heights residents wave their hands dismissively when the case against six Shomrim members is brought up. “It’s just politics,” they say. Despite the fact that these are fellow Jews, the young men standing trial on Wednesday are also the volunteers who altruistically aid the community daily, in countless ways. It would be commendable of the community to now actively take a stand for fellow Jews and give support to those who have been on-call 24/7 to serve others.

By Berel Jacobs
Shlomo Rubashkin and his wife enter court. He faces almost 170 charges

It is nearly a year and a half since the government’s immigration raid on the Agriprocessors Plant in Postville, IA. This started a chain reaction that eventually brought bankruptcy to the company, and the interruption of the Shechita in Postville, the effects of which have been felt all over the world. The tidal wave of problems that began in Postville was most strongly felt in the New York Metropolitan Area where the price of Glatt Kosher meat rose at least 25% in the wake of the raid.
