Rabbi Yisroel Bernath leads a popular class on Jewish mysticism at Chabad of NDG in Montreal, Canada’s West End.

If you’re young, hip, Jewish and living in Montreal, you might know Rabbi Yisroel Bernath.

He’s the 27-year-old Chabad-Lubavitch rabbi who makes a point of getting around town and connecting with the mostly young, unaffiliated Jews who call the trendy Monkland Village area home. Since opening in November 2008, his Chabad of NDG – a reference to the neighborhood’s official name on Montreal’s West End – has been packing them in, leading locals to speak in terms of a spiritual revival taking place.

The New Zealand government has banned kosher slaughter within its borders, according to a new law that is to immediately take effect. The law requires stunning before slaughter, despite the known fact that the severing of the carotid artery and trachea causes immediate loss of consciousness. Arutz Sheva reports that these measure were taken by Agriculture Minister, David Carter against the advice of his advisors.

From the inbox: I am not against all secular magazines, but when I went to a Jewish owned beauty salon in CH I was surprised to see among the reading material, some magazines that have virtually no redeeming value whatsoever and the only reason that someone would read such as magazine would be to see what the less moral side of the world is doing.

Weather last night showed no mercy as the Red Heifers faced The Tribe in an angst-filled match-up. The Tribe connected often and early, jumping to a wide-margin lead by the 3rd inning. As the rain created hazards at every turn on the field, runners were challenged to maintain their footing.

The game, where “the Jew” is chased down the highway, was played by some 40 high school students in Southern California's La Quinta High. Shliach to the area, Rabbi Posner voiced outrage, while the school principal says the students involved can't even be expelled.
